after using for a while with a Tenba backpack I am going to utilize a Deuter Act Trail 24 backpack to carry my photo gear. My back likes Deuter above photographic backpacks much better.
I have two questions.
a) I want to add a couple of quick release straps for external tripod carry.
Internal is possible, and more discreet to take public transportation, but I want to have external too if possible, for walks in the forest and so on.
Does anybody can recommend any of those straps? Did anybody made a similar transform, in this and on other backpack?
b) I want to buy a camera insert and/or lens pouches
My goal is to accommodate 4 lenses: one lox mounted, two loxs more and a larger 180mm one.
I have Biob 7 and it looks good, actually slightly large, for carrying two loxias. For the A7rii with a lens mounted it is too small. Does anybody have experience with Tenba inserts? Which one is large enough but as small as possible to be able to contain the A7rii with a lens mounted? Would it be better two inserts, one for the camera one for the spare lenses, or a single one? For the 180, a separate pouch maybe much better. Am I correct? Or should I put everything in separate pouches and the camera in a holster?
Any help or first hand experience will be very welcome!
I use a Deuter Freerider Pro 30L as my photography backpack, highly recommend using technical backpacks for photography, especially if it has a back zip.
My backpack is meant to carry skis and snowboards up a mountain for Backcountry snow sports, so it comes with the ability to slip in a tripod on both sides and directly on the back with an abundant amount of straps.
I've used a medium f stop insert to store most my photography gear well when I travel. It's held a A7R2 with a lens mounted (24 GM), a Loxia 21, Voigtlander 40, and a CZ 100-300 all pretty snug. Sometimes I carry my 100-300 separately though.
The images are of my Futura 32 it is usually set up for long hikes in difficult terrain.
Starting with the annotated Back:
i) Internal top pocket - rarely use, most awkward to access.
II) Zipped pocket - useful for keys and change.
Annotated front
i) Top pocket, used for quick access things - sunglasses, SatMap*, Compass, Whistle and spare hiking socks.
ii) Front pocket - covers for muddy boots. Pub visits.
iii) Side pocket - left hold sit mat - folded in four. Left holds snack bars. Underutilised
iv) Bottom compartment - only on larger sacks, Zipped divider from main compartment, folded breathable waterproof.
V) Rain cover
two net pockets one for rubbish the other for water or...
Main compartment pack after lower one. Mine has breathable overtrousers and a showerproof cycling jacket. sandwiches and fruit/veg. and spare lenses. The camera and lens*
I tried a divider but it was too bulky, Also Neoprene lense bags. But in the end i wind up with 1 or 2 lenses in the bag and 1 on the camera. most likely lens on the a7III is a Tamron 17-28 or 28-75. The Laowa 10-18 is the other lens if 3 travel.
I frequently walk with a fast group so if i spend time changing a lot of kit and perfecting a photo I loose the group. I tend to anticipate a photo and work out when I can take it..
I actually have the exact same backpack and use it some as a camera backpack via utilization of an insert...especially at racetracks where I usually have 2 longer lenses with me.
But if I'm using smaller lenses, such as last week in the Great Smokey Mountains, I use this as I can access the camera without taking it off, and the top storage area works well.

you mean Deuter Act Trail 24 ?
what insert are you using?

Correct- the Act Trail 24. The insert was one I found on eBay I believe. Nothing fancy, but sized correctly to fit flush in the bottom of the pack yet be tall enough for something like a 100-400 to fit, lens pointing down on the body, securely. I will typically have 2 lenses with me, a longer one and another one on the other side of the divider.
I know some are using dividers where they take the whole thing out when they get to where they're going, mine is set up more for taking it off my back and pulling the camera straight out of the bag.

I use the BYOB 10 with my a7rii, L bracket, 16-35, 24-105, and a Canon 70-200 f4. None have hoods as I use a Lee filter system. A bit tight but it all fits. Using an Osprey 32l as my pack.
Yes its fits, but for perfect fitting, an strap would be great. On the other side it also fits but also would be better fized with an strap. I believe that with 2 straps it can be even fixed in the center, which would be even more confortable.

When using it at racetracks I typically don't need a tripod. But I have a Gitzo traveler that'd fit in the drink holder pocket I believe.
I use an Osprey pack with an old Mountain Hardware camera organizer cube inside. To secure a tripod I use two Voile ski straps; they are light, strong, and incredibly versatile. I highly recommend the straps for both general adventure/traveling as well as photography.
