p.1 #1 · canon to sony flash help

Hi All
I have moved from a canon 5dmk2 to a sony A7r3 and need some help on what to do about flashes >
I have a Phottix Mitros Flash for Canon and a 430 II canon flash and the odin II transmitter
I was wondering if I bought a odin II for Sony if it would fire the two flashes
thanks

Sorry, your Mitros flashes can only be triggered by line of site with your Sony.
Several months ago at a trade show here in Nashville, I had moved from Canon to Sony and was selling off some remaining gear to UPP. I spoke with Eddie with the MACgroup and he advised to hold onto my Canon Mitros+ flashes as the could be triggered, after a firmware update, using either a Sony Mitros+ on camera or an Odin for Sony on camera.

I checked with the Phottix people and was told this was not the case (I’ll put the email at the bottom of this post). So, I got back with Eddie who put me in contact with a MACGroup tech guy who tested and came to the conclusion above, the Canon Mitros could only be triggered manually, so no TTL or HSS. In the meantime, I purchased an Odin II for Sony and a Sony Mitros+. I also have three new in box Phottix Indra 500 strobes that can be triggered by either the Sony Mitros+ or Odin II. But now I am trying to decide whether to scrap the whole Phottix system and go with Godox/ Flashpoint. Or I could keep all the Phottix gear and sell the two remaining Canon Mitros+ at Imaging in a few weeks and buy two Phottix Juno TTL Canon units, which will work off camera with Sony.

In short, Eddie was told by Phottix that a firmware upgrade to OS-Z would turn a Canon Mitros into a Phottix Juno which could be triggered by a Sony Mitros+ or Sony Odin II. This was incorrect however, the new Phottix Juno has both Canon and Sony built in and can be triggered. Phottix only has the Canon put now and can’t be used on camera as the hot shoe is different from Canon to Sony.

Anyhow, here is my email and reply from Phottix:
My email
Hello

I currently own 3 Mitros+ TTL Transceiver Flash units for Canon
I also own 3 Indra 500 TTL Studio Lights
I recently switched from Canon to Sony and was told by a rep from the MACGROUP at a recent trade show that I could keep all my existing Phottix equipment and that it would work with my Sony cameras (A9 & A7III)

I was told the the only thing I would need to operate the Indra 500 units was a new trigger - either an Odin II for Sony or a Mitros+ for Sony with the Odin built in. I purchased both.

I was also told that my Mitros+ for Canon would work as well just not on camera but I would need to update the firmware.

Looking on your website, it would suggest to upgrade the Sony Odin II, Sony Mitros+, Canon Mitros+ and Indra 500 all to the new Z operating system through a firmware update.

Is this all correct?
It would appear that this solution would be the only possibility until the Juno TTL is released for Sony. Is there a date for that release?

Their reply
Hello:

Thank you for contacting us.

Some of this information needs to be clarified:

I was told the the only thing I would need to operate the Indra 500 units was a new trigger - either an Odin II for Sony or a Mitros+ for Sony with the Odin built in. I purchased both.

That is correct. You could also use the Odin Lite trigger which could be an alternative option for you (see further explanation below).

I was also told that my Mitros+ for Canon would work as well just not on camera but I would need to update the firmware.

That is incorrect. The Mitros+ Canon does not feature cross-brand auto switch function when updated to the latest Odin Z firmware. See the following post below, and the Odin Z product function relationship is attached for your reference.

The newest Juno TTL Canon speedlite flash does that and can be used off-camera with Sony cameras. The only way you could trigger the Mitros+ from the Odin II for Sony would be manually (no remote power control or other TTL functions will be supported under this setting), the Mitros+ should be set to Strato II receiver mode.

An alternative option would be using the Phottix Odin Lite trigger. It will allow to control your Mitros+ power in Manual, however it will not support HSS nor other TTL functions. Please see the video on the Odin Lite used on Fuji, it would work the same way on Sony cameras:

Looking on your website, it would suggest to upgrade the Sony Odin II, Sony Mitros+, Canon Mitros+ and Indra 500 all to the new Z operating system through a firmware update.

That is correct. We recommend upgrading all of your Phottix flashes and Odin II triggers to Odin Z firmware.

It would appear that this solution would be the only possibility until the Juno TTL is released for Sony. Is there a date for that release?

So far there is no date available for Juno TTL release.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Please get in touch if you need further assistance.
