Was curious... If you've owned/ tried both, which did you keep/ like better and why? I have the older Sigma 20mm 1.8 and love the rendering. It seems as thought the 2 are similarly priced, used. I realize the Nikon AF is probably quicker, but how much? I am leaning towards the Sigma and hoping it's AF will work in live view unlike my old Sigma. Anyways... Thank you for your input.
Depends on your criteria I have the 20/1.8G and it is excellent and lends to a superb travel lens. I also a fan of the Sigma Art series and did acquire the 20/1.4 Art but is was a beast even on the D810/D850 and soon moved it on. If absolute IQ is the intent the 20/1.4 Art is superb.
I would arrange your question in a different way and let you make your own decisions.
Since you said that you already own the previous version of the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 and is satisfied with its performance. Do you really need another 20mm? Is the difference between f/1.8 to f/1.4 or 2/3 of a stop important to you? If so, the Sigma is the only way to go.
Next is the weight and size you are willing to carry. If you preferred small and light, the Nikon 20mm f/1.8G is I think the best option. Not only that one does not have to worry about future compatibility.
But, if you prefer the very best at the moment and only carry a single lens most of the time, I think the Sigma will do very well.
So, you have to ask yourself all those questions before deciding if you really need to spend those money, and on which one.
For myself, I am very happy with my 20mm f/1.8G because I got it before the Sigma 20mm f/1.4A came out, and I usually carry a number of lenses and the 20mm is not the main lens on my camera, so I preferred that to be small, light and good enough. For the main lens that remains on the bodies are the 28mm f/1.4E, 50mm f/1.4A and the 105mm f/1.4E. All of them are big, heavy and extremely good for their range.
I was hoping for improved AF performance, mostly. The size isn't a concern and from what I've seen, they are not too far apart, price wide on the used market.

Ah! If that is the case, you will need to bring your Sigma to one of the shops to try it out together with the Nikon 20mm f/1.8G because I have no idea how fast or slow is your Sigma.
If after the test and you think is about the same, then you can save those money for some other lens.
For my personal usage, I don't think I have any problem with the AF speed, it focuses really fast and silently.
