p.1 #1 · Sony 135mm GM vs. Sigma 135mm comparison?

I know the GM won't be out for another 1.5 months but there has been a few comparisons from YouTuber's and photographer's between the 135mm Batis, 85mm GM, and some other lenses. I'm hoping someone out there has compared it to the Sigma as it seems to be the most direct competitor. Anyone seen a comparison of these two?

I hope the Sony GM can match this:

" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Sony 135mm 1.8GM vs Sigma 135mm 1.8 ART by Manny Ortiz

Resume:
- No difference in optical performance/look.

- In good light both perform admirably with the Sony beeing faster to snap.

- In low light the Sony is significantly more reliable and faster. The Sigma really struggles in low light.

That's what I want and need - low light performance. Any number of 135mm f1.8's can do a good job in adequate light but in low light where lenses tend to hunt at f1.8 - that's the real test.

I have used the Sigma at a number of events including dimly-lit gala dinners without any significant focusing issues using my A9. I have also used it to shoot basketball in terribly dark gym lighting and it performed quite well on the A9. The Sony is likely better, but how much better will require some more comparisons, IMO.

I've compared the Sony 135/1.8 GM directly against the Sigma 135/1.8 in terms of resolution and rendering:

Likewise..specially after upgrading all 3 A7R3, MC-11 and 135mm Art EF mount, the Eye AF accuracy went up a LOT which was the main driving force for me to sell it and get the GM so now I can take my time and wait for maybe a $200 deal on the GM before buying it.
I did like the bokeh on the Sigma better from Fred's test but I would like the extra AF speed of the GM and that extra detail for more cropping options. Specially since I plan to add an A9 in the future, I am guessing the AF speed of the GM will shine there.

If I was pushed Id say I prefer the Sigma's look overall. But the sharpness, better focusing, aperture ring etc pushes me to the Sony eventually.

They are very similar in rendering though and get even closer when lowering the GM's contrast in post.
The Sigma's AF is actually very good. (I only tried the native FE mount)
It's not as fast though which makes the GM a better option for action, especially in low light.
For static portraits, the Sigma does really well imo.

I have used my Sigma 135 FE a lot in very low light and it does a good job on my A9. Sharper wide open than my 70-200. Fine color and contrast. Not so sure how much improvement I will get with the Sony on the A9’s 24 mP sensor. So I’m going to wait a bit before I consider paying the approx $900 cost to swap out the Sigma for the Sony.

pretty much why I have no rush in getting the GM. I sure I will one day, just lower priority. I really hate that it's 1KG....

I know the sigma is larger, but it was never meant to be a permanent lens.

After having used both, the 135GM is much faster to snap to focus an I found the GM to far more accurate when used wide open. This is on my A7RIII. Overall the GM is just more of a pleasure to use.
Glad I lugged it cross country this weekend - I would have never taken the Sigma due to the extra volume and weight. The Sigma is no slouch for sure, but the GM is another notch higher in most regards.

How does Batis 135 compare to the Sigma and GM in terms of low light AF and overall AF speed?

Used a rented Sigma on a Canon body; absolutely loved the IQ. Also didn't miss focus, never stopped it down.

For the price, and for a dedicated 'portrait' lens, it's hard to beat!

However, the linear motors in the 135GM are on another level, and Sony's native AF is just spectacular for stills.

[I do wonder if there isn't something goofy between the camera and the lens with respect to focusing in lower light with the Sigma- I had no trouble with it on a DSLR, and the A7R III with updates really shouldn't either; it should be better]
