p.1 #1 · Leica R lens tests to cover the Mini MF sensor size 33mm X 44mm
Rather than continuing to post results of tests in the new Hasselblad X1D-50c Medium Format Mirrorless and to assist those that are considering either the new Hasselblad X1D-50c or the new Fujifilm GFX 50S mirrorless cameras that both have the same 33mm X 44mm sensor size, I am posting results of my tests here.
These tests are being conducted to determine Leica R lenses that will cover the new format size as Manual focus lenses that will be options to cover this format. At this point, the Hasselblad is a closed system that will only accept and use Leaf Shutter lenses including those designed for the camera and some other Hasselblad lenses including the V series lenses. Unless Hassleblad comes out with a usable Electronic shutter, the Leica R lenses will not prove of any value. However, the announced Fujifilm camera has a focal plane shutter, is considering the release of leaf shutter lenses, and this system is and will be an open system as is the Sony A7 series of cameras. Those R lenses that will cover the sensor size should be considered as options for the soon to be released Fujifilm camera providing a maker will make a Leica R to the new Fujifilm mount.
To begin the data and images, I will provide the data and information provided in the Hassleblad X1D-50c Medium Format Mirrorless Thread. I will start this information in the following post and the information regarding other lenses in subsequent posts.

I performed some relatively quick tests with my Leica R 180mm f3.4 Apo Telyt with my A7r both mounted on my Cambo Actus camera.
I think that you should be pleased with the results. No these are not great images or worked at all and the images that I am posting are taken from the RAW files saved as TIFF files that were then imported into Photoshop CS6 which then used photo merge to create Panoramic Images. There is certainly some issue with the second image due to the images not being exactly the same exposure particularly visible in the sky and the exposures are not perfect. Additionally there are some issues for the focus in some locations noted in the very large RAW files that are not visible here.
I really pushed the lens with the camera to see what could be done. Yes vignetting is quite noticeable at the corners that will need some attention for usage on the Mini Format Medium Format of 33mm X 44mm with the Hasselblad and the Fujfilm cameras.
For the first image, the Panorama was created from 9 images taken horizontally at f11 using +, 0, and -5mm of rise/fall and 10mm of left and right shift and the null postion. This is the first image. This created a 457.9 MB 11477 X 7018 Pixel file.
The second image consists of 3 vertical images taken with the lens at f3.4. This image was taken using left, right and shift of 10mm and the null position. This created a 380.2 MB file of 9014 X 7372 Pixel file. This image demonstrates that the lens will cover the Hasselblad and the Fuljifilm 33mm X 44mm senosor size. The image itself has a ratio of 0.818 while the new format has a 0.75 ratio. The image would provide a 36mm X 44mm size.
The second image consists of 3 vertical images taken with the lens at f11. This image was taken using left, right and shift of 10mm and the null position. This created a 380.3 MB file of 9004 X 7382 Pixel file. This image demonstrates that the lens will cover the Hasselblad and the Fuljifilm 33mm X 44mm senosor size. The image itself has a ratio of 0.82 while the new format has a 0.75 ratio. The image would provide a 36mm X 44mm size.
So, unless I am mistaken, this is the first of my Leica R lenses that should at the very least cover the new 33mm X 44mm sensor size and should prove to be quite valuable as a telephoto lens to use with my A7r cameras when used with my Cambo Actus.

The second Leica R lens that I have tested was my Leica R 100mm f2.8 Apo-Macro-Elmarit lens. Again as will be for the following tests the lens was tested using my Sony A7r and my Cambo Actus relying on the shift capabilities to determine the lens coverage.
My findings for my 100mm Apo-Macro-Elmarit lens indicate that this lens should easily cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor of the Mini Format MF 33mm X 44mm sensor size. For this lens, I will change the order of the images presented because this lens offers an immense image circle as you approach infinity.
The first image was prepared from 3 vertical images using + and - 10mm plus the null image to create an image that is 36mm X 44mm image size. For this image the images were taken wide open at f2.8. Again the images were combined in Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 to create the final image.
The second image was also prepared using + and - 10mm plus the null image to create an image that is 36mm X 44mm image size. For this image the images were taken at f11. Again the images were combined in Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 to create the final image.
The third image was prepared from 9 images taken horizontally at f2.8 using +, 0, and -10mm of rise/fall and 10mm of left and right shift and the null postion. All of the images were combind in Photoshop CS6 to create an image approaching 44mm X 56mm.

The third Leica R lens that I have tested was my Leica R 100mm f4 Macro Bellows Elmar lens. Again as will be for the following tests the lens was tested using my Sony A7r and my Cambo Actus relying on the shift capabilities to determine the lens coverage.
My findings for my 100mm Macro Bellows lens indicate that this lens should easily cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor of the Mini Format MF 33mm X 44mm sensor size as well. For this lens, only 2 images are presented and like the Apo-Macro-Elmarit the lens it offers a huge image circle.
The first image was prepared from 3 vertical images using + and - 10mm plus the null image to create an image that is 36mm X 44mm image size. For this image the images were taken wide open at f4.
The 100mm Macro Bellows lens like the 100mm Apo-Macro-Elmarit consisting of 9 images would create an image approaching 44mm X 56mm.

The fourth Leica R lens that I have tested was my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2 lens. Again as will be for the following tests the lens was tested using my Sony A7r and my Cambo Actus relying on the shift capabilities to determine the lens coverage.
Unfortunately for those hoping that the Leica R 28mm f2.8 V2 lens would cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor it will not. My findings for my Leica R 28mm f2.8 V2 lens may cover a sensor size of approximately 34mm X 36mm.
The single image that I will present is from 3 vertical images using + and - 5mm plus the null image to create an image that is approximately 34mm X 36mm image size. For this image the images were taken at f11. Again the images were combined in Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 to create the final image.
However, for those interested, my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC (SK Super Angulon PC) has an image circle of 63mm and will easily cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor size.

The APO-Elmarit-R 180 will also cover it beautifully, Rich. My buddy's Lux-R 35, on the other hand, lacks about 5mm in its IC to fully cover it, and what it does cover outside of the 42mm IC isn't very pretty, even stopped down to f/8. The e60 Elmarit-R 24 lacks close to 10mm in its IC.

The fifth Leica R lens that I have tested was my Leica R 60mm f2.8 Macro Elmarit lens. Again as will be for the following tests the lens was tested using my Sony A7r and my Cambo Actus relying on the shift capabilities to determine the lens coverage.
Unfortunately for those hoping that theLeica R 60mm f2.8 Macro Elmarit lens would cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor it will not.
For this lens, only 2 images are presented.
The first image was prepared from 3 vertical images using + and - 10mm plus the null image to create an image that would be 36mm X 44mm image size if the lens covered. For this image the images were taken wide open at f2.8. Again the images were combined in Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 to create the final image.
The second image was also prepared using + and - 10mm plus the null image to create an image that would be 36mm X 44mm image size if the lens covered. For this image the images were taken at f11. Again the images were combined in Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 to create the final image.
p.1 #11 · Leica R lens tests to cover the Mini MF sensor size 33mm X 44mm
The sixth Leica R lens that I have tested was my Leica R 50mm f2 Summicron lens. Again as will be for the following tests the lens was tested using my Sony A7r and my Cambo Actus relying on the shift capabilities to determine the lens coverage.
Unfortunately for those hoping that theLeica R 60mm f2.8 Macro Elmarit lens would cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor it will not at f2 and probably also does not at f8 or f11.
The second image was also prepared using + and - 10mm plus the null image to create an image that would be 36mm X 44mm image size if the lens covered (I do not believe the lens covers looking at the corners of the sky; but it may be usable). For this image the images were taken at f11. Again the images were combined in Photomerge in Photoshop CS6 to create the final image.
Though the lens certainly does not cover the 33mm X 44mm sensor size at f2 and also probably does not cover the sensor size at f8 or f11, the lens may still prove of value when stopped down and would cover most of the sensor size.

Not too surprising that it's only the telephotos so far. Still I'd held out vain hope for the 28, unlikely as its diminutive size made that seem.
Still, I could see myself using a 180 APO-Cron as a portrait lens with the GFX.
If you get a chance you should see if the 100AME covers at its intended closer ranges..
Hi Lee,
Lenses should increase their image circles as the distance from infinity decreases. As the focus distance moves into the close-up range the image circle should be immense. But, I will check to see this for confirmation.

Any chance on wide lenses like the 19mm, 21mm, 24mm, or 21-35mm? I am looking to use one of these on a shift adapter on a Leica SL so I figure it would be good news if they covered the mini MF sensor.

I don't think they will have any chance of covering the image circle needed.
