p.1 #1 · Westcott Rapid Box 36" or Elinchrom Deep Octa 39" output

Just checking to see if anyone had experience with both. I'm sure they both are very good, which is why I'm mostly curious about the light output/efficiency compared to each other.

If you have any other comments about material quality, on location use (which is what I'll be using it for) or anything else, please comment. I'll be using it with Elinchrom Pro HD 500 and 1000 units.

Thanks,
Roma

I have the little brother of the Rapid Box 36", the 27". I find it well built and durable and it produces a very nice looking light.

Thanks dmacmillan for the reply. Glad to hear the build quality is good. I'm familiar with Rotalux material and like it, have a small rectangle and a stripbox of theirs. It's very light weight. I just like the way Westcott's setup and that I can add an inexpensive 3-rd party grid.
All of these things are a consideration because I'll be using it for environmental portraits indoors and outdoors without assistants.

Also considering a Rapid Box Duo for 2 speedlite setup, just don't know if it'll be enough juice for outdoor use.

With the amount of power you have with your two Elinchrom strobes it's not about efficiency, it's about light quality. The Deep Octa is one of the best modifiers you can buy hands down. Especially since you already have Elinchrom strobes. Even if you had Profoto or Bron it would still be one of the best modifiers you could own.

The only Wescott product I use is their 7’ umbrella so I can't offer an opinion there but I do love the light from my Elinchrom boxes. I happened to run across this JoeyL strobe comparison video and his opinion seems to parallel Gregg’s regarding the Elinchrom modifiers.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I should've stated that I hope to get something more portable (possibly quadra) for those times when speedlites aren't cutting it anymore. Yes, I really like Elinchrom modifiers, just got to thinking about grids since I use them on the rectangles.
I know Lighttools makes quality grids for Elinchrom octas, but man, they are steep.
Any other grid solutions for EL octas?

If there is a downside to Elinchrom boxes grid availability is it. The Lightools are very nice but way over priced IMO. However Honeygrids now offers a grid for the octa that is reasonably priced. I just don't know how well it works . But they are nice people and I'm sure would tell you if you call. Now if i want a gridded source I shoot with my Mola Demi and black or white grid. Another solution would be to buy a Profoto/Elinchrom Speedring and one of the new Profoto OCF boxes with a grid.

Hope it's not too breezy (or you've sandbagged appropriately) since the Octa, like many softboxes, will blow over, especially with a lightweight Quadra head.

Yes, I'm definitely considering the size for windy situations, which is why the 39" deep octa is the largest I'm thinking of at the moment for shooting alone and with sand bags. This is also why I was thinking of the Westcott box and because I can slap an inexpensive fabric grid on it. Leaning towards the elinchrom because I have other boxes from them and like them.

I have been researching modifiers and found this 36" deep softbox from Cheetahstand called the Ricebowl. I don't know if it is what you are looking for, but it looks like it might be worth a look. It comes with a grid included in the price. If anyone has actually seen/used one of these, what did you think? I currently have a Westcott Rapid Octa 26" and need a second slightly larger softbox, so was thinking this might be the way to go.
