This will be a big help to anyone who doesn't know what to do
The new Canon 24-70 f/4 IS is EXPENSIVE compared to the old 24-105 so this comparison hands on review will help you decide...hint, the better is not always the most expensive:
If you want a f/2.8 (like me) and didn't want to get rid of IS, look at this shootout between the Canon 24-70 f/4L IS & Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC
I think i'll be going with the extra stop of light

I love Roger's articles but honestly, no one has been able to get that kind of resolution out of this lens. He uses some precision manual focus as well so maybe that was it. Take a look at other sharpness results out there too like from 'the-digital-picture' and you will see lower performances than what Roger has noticed. Not sure why his results are so high but most other tests have been on par with what I was seeing. I use lensrentals all the time though because Roger and his team are so knowledgeable and helpful plus the blog they have is nice.

One thing I'll add because it's a late addendum to the article mentioned above.
We have always tested at both extremes on zooms, because one extreme is usually the weakest point. On the 24-70 f/4 IS, however, the weak point is 50mm, not 24 or 70mm. It's not awful, but it's not as good as 70. If you are after ultimate resolution, the Tamron, which is pretty close to even with the f/4 IS at 24 and 70mm is clearly a bit better at 50mm.
One other thing is we're doing some work now with 3 different reviewers trying to get best copies. The 50mm thing came up because of feedback from reviewers that we've confirmed now on dozens of copies. But there also seems to be more copy-to-copy variation than we generally see. And it's a bit odd. Never severely out of spec, but one lens is a bit soft on the top at 50mm but fine everywhere else. Another is slightly decentered at 70mm, this one has a bit of tilt at 24mm, etc. etc.
I'm not sure what it all means, or if it's just early shipment tolerance problems. Only a couple out of 60 copies have been classified as bad, but most of them have one little weakness or another.

24-70/4L IS is way too expensive for what it has to offer.
As much as I would like to go the f/2.8 route with IS, I personally wouldn't go with Tamron. First, I prefer Canon lenses over any third-party lenses for several reasons. And I've heard there are a few issues with this lens from Tamron.
First, it's about an element inside that can come loose over time:
I'm sure the Tamron 24-70mm VC is an excellent lens and new firmware may just fix this. But, in the meantime, these are somethings to consider if you're in the market for one.

Bah! 6 yr warrantee on the tamron. If any of these rare issues occur you'll know within the first few days/weeks, I wouldn't worry about any of them if youre in the market for the lens.

I would add, too, that we haven't seen any more of the second lens issue since that first shipment. I think they've corrected it, or perhaps just a run with bad seals.

I was very pleased with the Tamron that I rented over the holidays. I did not do any test charts or brick walls, just family photos. I needed the f2.8 for low light indoors but preferred bounce flash at f4-5.6 when I could. If it didn't have the coma (astro photos), I would buy it instead of the canon mark II without any regrets.

I think this might answer my question of my next lens. Looks like a Green flag for the Tamron. It's cheaper than the Nikon or Canon II version. Looks like a tad bit better than the Canon I version and you get IS (which I love ...yes I do love it in this focal range).
I"m sure Canon & Nikon will both come out with IS/VC versions of the 24-70mm, but their going to be sitting at 3k is my guess when they do come out and be sold out for months from the PRO's who need every last ounce out of their equipment.

The 24-70 f4 IS that rented recently from you was excellent at all focal lengths.
