Canon EOS Rebel XT (350D)

Review Date: Oct 11, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 8

Pros: Good resolution, perfectly capable little SLR, Good learning tool, Affordable, Canon mount
White Balance, Build, Plastic, Size, Not worth the money for what you get!

Entry level product with a high cost/ performance ratio but low build/cost ratio. Capable of good pictures with good lens but really needs the vertical grip. Compared to the cheaper Nikon entry level D50 the build really sucks. I think canon could improve the quality of the build without increasing the size and still make a healthy profit. It does tend to feel cheap though the main strength is producing fantastic images which fortunately this camera is capable of. Overall recommended for those comtemplating digital phography wanting a high quality camera, not bothered about the build and happy to upgrade in the future.

Pros: Pin point sharpness for text and cloured graphics, photographs and drawings
Prob something i havent encountered?? Inkfade?

I bought this for my architectural portfolio when I was job hunting in February. I was about to get the epson 1800 because of its fadeless ink but luckily they were out of stock so i picked up one of these so called old printers! All my work printed out fabulously, text was razor sharp (even at 6pt) and my graphical work looked amazing especially in the acrylic sleeves of my portfolio. Also being a new father pictures of my little baby printed out wonderfully especially skin tone. I have purchased non canon inks and they seem to perform just as well )fingers crossed...

I intend to keep prints in portfolio sleeves so hope they last if not i will just run off another set in 5 years. I look after my work put them in dark dry cool storage protected so wont esxpect any problems here.

Would have liked to have waited for the new canon printers with lifetime inks but no regrets...

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

Review Date: Dec 10, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: lovely brokeh, light and compact, sharp for the price
manual focus ring is cheap and plastc, hunts when focusing in low light

I like this lens, mainly for the portraits but have used effectively for architectural and landscape detail shots. Images are vivid are colourful good sharpness. Could be better built, bought one through ebay. I would dread to think how bad the mark 2 version of this is built quality wise, this is good but not amazing. Do find it to be a useful and inexpensive start to my camera setup.

Sigma 20-40mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF

sounds like there are huge variations of quality with this lens. I find my copy pretty soft wide open but sharpen immensely at around f4 and brilliant at f8. I have developed around 500 pics and most are sharp and bright, only hand shake because of the lens weight and my small 350 which contribute to slightly blurry images in low lighting. Think the lens is definately a keeper but i am finding the range a little limiting. I think the copies are either excellent or extremely poor from these review with no middle ground very strange.

would def exchange or persevere for a good copy as the build quality is excellent.

Sigma 20-40mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF

Pros: Sharp images, little distortion even at 20mm. Build quality and images are fantastic
Weight, very minor CA fringing, MF/AF focus switching a bit cumbersome, loud focusing not very quick

Bought this from and fitted it to my new eos 305D. I take a lot of architectural shots and landscapes, so my recent honeymoon trip to sicilly provided the perfect platform to test it out. The colours are not as vivid as i wantd but probably due to the overcast weather. however I caught some amazing sunrises, interiors of cathedrals and landscape shots over mountains. Images were very sharp at all zoom ranges and very useful in night shots however i should have took along my tripod!

Overall i am pleased with the inexpensive lense especially in comparison to the Canon L range which would cost over double what i paid for.
