i sold off my 70-200 f2.8 IS for this lens and i never looked back!
why f4 IS?
half the weight
slightly sharper wide open
better IS and did i mention its half the weight of 2.8 IS??
what i'd miss?
the lovely bokeh on 2.8
the hood
77mm filter size i share among my other L's
simply a great lens .. and the envy of my Nikon friends

Price paid: $600.00
| Rating: 10

Pros:
weight, price, constant 2.8
Cons:
none .. absolutely perfect for the price i paid
it was either the newer 17-40 f4 or the 13 year old 17-35 f2.8. I found a used but very good condition 17-35 f2.8, tested it along with 17-40. Constant f2.8 at 600 is hard to beat.

Pros:
price & sharpness
Cons:
slow focusing in low light

i needed a macro lens and i found one in good shape and price. tested it for a while, paid my dues and went home a happy man.
this lens is all about sharpness .. only wish it had HSM as it tends to hunt in bad lighting.
for the price i paid its a steal.

Pros:
great bokeh, constant 2.8 throughout the FL, IS, built quality & very fast focusing speed
Cons:
price & a tad heavy
i needed a lens to shoot concert/events. this lens is great, the IS is superb and the focusing speed is very very fast. I coupled this lens with the sigma 1.4x TC and i like what i see. I was in a dilema once, f4is or f2.8is? I went over to a cam shop and asked for both lens to test. I went home with the f2.8IS and never looked back.
highly recommended!!
