Nikon 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G AFS DX

Review Date: Feb 10, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $200.00 | Rating: 7

Pros: good value for the going price
not as sharp

I am quite disappointed with the softness of this lens. I owned 3 of these by now. Must be a copy variation as the 2nd one I owned was a little sharper of all 3, but still not as sharp as 18-105VR or even 18-55.
All of the 18-70's I owned had a slightly wobbly end when at 70mm (I hear same complains from other 18-70 users). That was quite annoying as the lens has a real SWM motor, metal mount and should be a better build.
Other than sharpness I really have no major complains about this lens. The AF ring really works great for fine tuning.

Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR DX -Nikkor

Review Date: Feb 10, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $200.00 | Rating: 6

Pros: sharp, VR
bad CA's, plastic, cheap quality

VR is the only real bonus of this lens. Perfect walkaround lens. Sharper than 18-70. However the plastic build, cheap SWM motor from 18-55 kit lens, and quite bad CA's made me get rid of it. It's a good lens for most average users on D90 (which corrects some of the CA's). This is a new Nikon Kit lens, nothing else.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor

Review Date: Feb 10, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $280.00 | Rating: 7

Pros: sharp, sharp
not wide enough, very bad CA's

This really is a great lens. It is sharp wide open and it very, very sharp stopped down a little. I ended up returning mine (after 3 tries) because the 35mm is really useless on a DX crop format. Its not wide enough for landscapes, and not zoomed enough for zoom in macro style photography either. Great indoors as most of the time 35mm will be enough for snapshots. Aside the zoom range my biggest complain was the CA's. Get ready for purple/green highlights around all shiny objects and drastic changes of contrast. It is overpriced for what it is. I cant justify almost $300 with tax for that lens. For half the price the 50mm 1.8 is a much better value, more useful and no CA's !

Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D AF

Review Date: Feb 10, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $150.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: sharp, macro
front element rotates, ugly lens hood

This is my favourite Nikon lens. I sold my 50mm prime lens after buying this one. It is super sharp when stopped down just a little. Even wide open its pretty sharp. The macro feature of this lens is unbelievable. I just love it. This lens is like a swiss army knife. Its 105mm macro and decent range walk around zoom in one. It will even be more useful when I eventually switch to FX. My only complain is the huge goofy lens hood it comes with.

Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS

Review Date: Feb 10, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $360.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: optical stabilizer, versatile
soft wide open, long barrel at 200mm

Used on Canon. This lens is not bad at all. Good walkaround lens. As with most lenses, has to be stopped down to get good results. Optical Stabilizer works great. I wish it did not extend that far at 200mm setting.

Tamron 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 AF

Review Date: Feb 10, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $190.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Sharp stopped, full frame
Close focus, soft wide open

Used on Canon and Nikon. This is a very underestimated lens. I had one of these while ago with a Canon mount. I wasn't impressed with the sharpness at all. Might have been Canon's usual AF accuracy problem but after many tests I ended up returning the lens.

Later on when I switched to Nikon I decided to give this lens a try again. Image quality and sharpness seem to be very consistent this time. I found When stopped down to f11 / f14 this lens is quite amazing.

The only complains I have with this lens are: close focus range seems far, also because the best results are produced when lens is stopped down means you will have to crank up the ISO up not to get any camera shake or use tripod. Shooting with the lens on a sunny day is not a problem.
