Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM

Review Date: Apr 18, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp, sharp, sharp. Fast focus and hand holdable.
Cost, but you get what you pay for.

I've had this lens for a short while and I use it mainly for motorsport.

I thought my 300 f2.8 IS L was good but this is just as good.
The sharpness and speed of focus is amazing and I can hand hold for panning shots without much issue.

Adding the 1.4x convertor works really well and pushes it out to 700mm ithout any noticable drop off in IQ on my 1D MkIII.

This and the 300 2.8 are the best glass I have ever used. Well worth the expense.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM

Review Date: Nov 29, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharpness, focus speed, IS

I have had both the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 and the Sigma equivilent of this lens but neither are as good as this.

Sharpness is amasing and it is so easy to hand hold.

A great lens if you can afford it.

Sigma 300mm f2.8 EX APO HSM

Review Date: May 4, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharpness and colour rendition. Works well with EX APO 1.4 Teleconverter
Tripod mount is too small. Should be same as 120-300 F2.8 DG

This is to replace my stellar Sigma 120-300 F2.8 workhorse lens on a 1D MkII.

I bought it secondhand from a guy that has gone to the equivilent Canon, and it is in new condition.

I shoot motorcycle sports and it is a great lens for this.

Handholdable down to 200th sec pans with perfectly sharp images of bikes at around 80mph and this was with the 1.4 on it (420mm). No image quality loss, just stunning.

Would recommend to anyone and even new is a fraction of the Canon 300 F2.8 price, albeit without IS, but it does come with the drop in CircPol that you have to buy separately with the Canon

Highly recommended.

Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX DG HSM

Review Date: Mar 13, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Good focus speed and extremely sharp evan at 2.8
Weight, but thats what you get at 300mm f2.8

I bought this lens, the older non DG version, second hand.
It has done some work by the look of it but it performs perfectly, so this has to be a plus for build quality.
The image quality is first rate with good colour and exceptional sharpness from 2.8 to 11.
It is heavy but on a good monopod this is not a problem.
I'll be using it mainly for motorsport and tracking on my 1D MkII seems to be no problem either.

Overall, great buy and great lens.
