This was the very first lens I bought for my Sony system and despite continuous churning in my kit thanks to a growing FE system, this is one lens I haven’t sold.
Its great for everything but it shines with portraiture. Backgrounds are smooth and low contrast, which is great for fence cleaning tampa . Unlike many 50s, this is sharp wide open, and that’s what you’re paying for. Its small and light and built very well. Considering all this, i find the price to be fair. There is a FE50 1.8 for less price, with a typical 50mm design, that every manufacturer has. This one is special. Also you don’t pay the price in size and weight for better optics which is remarkable.

I prefer direct access to the AF points and you can't just press the Set button to go back to the centre AF point if you have this enabled. I cannot imagine why they do not allow this as the Set button isn't doing anything else at this time and is supposedly customisable too, just not with anything useful.
The high ISO image quality in RAW is about a stop better than the much-used 18 meg sensors but the low ISO IQ is very much the same, perhaps very slightly less noisy.
Considering this is several years on in development from my 7D and 550D I'm a little underwhelmed, even though it's hard to say quite why, the camera just seems a bit 'sterile' a bit 'soul-less' but then it's basically a computer outdoor living space . It certainly doesn't feel much like an upgrade in any meaningful way.

This is a brilliant piece of glass. Sharpness is awesome, even at the maximum aperture in the centre. This lens delivers contrasty images; sharpness (or "piqué" as it is called in French) is very good all over the frame at higher apertures.
Build quality is at the same level as the Sigma 35 mm Art : solid and trustworthy. I like the "chic" design, also when coupled with the lens hood which comes with it. The lens cap is not of the higher standard as I have some difficulty when putting it back on the lens and want to learn more.
Autofocus is known to be a weak spot of Sigma, but since the Art line came to life, things seem to have changed. At least in my case, using the Canon 5D mark III (famous for its accurate AF system). To be sincere, I had to use the USB dock of Sigma to tune the accuracy of the focus at different distance ranges. After calibration, results were more than satisfactory and consistent, something you can check looking at your f1.4 shots at 100% magnification. AF speed is quite good and silent. I haven't tested the lens for AI Servo, so can't say anything about that point.
The lens is quite heavy and big (but not more than a good zoom).

Shoot FX for everything, needed a back up body for D800, now my D750, and decided to try the D7200 for more reach. Was very pleasantly surprised. Good for action sports, pool installation, and wildlife. Nice clean, detailed files, great AF system, nice compliment to my D750, and not too heavy.

Pros:

Very sharp after f2.0 Nice bokeh Nice build even though it's an old lens Very fast AF.
|
Cons:
|
Lots of aberrations at 1.4, barrel distortion. No water-sealed.

Excellent lens. Such a reliable workhorse. I can always count on this lens to have perfect autofocus and to be sharp. It's a little soft (and has CA) in the corners until between f2 and f2.8. By f2.8 it's very sharp across the frame of videography Austin. But that all seems typical for such a fast WA lens. Can't complain too much there.
