Very sharp especially at 350mm and f8, versatile, relatively light weight, hand holdability with IS which is a great boon when shooting wildlife from a safari vehicle, reasonably priced compared to many other L's

I bought this lens about 6 month back prior to an African safari trip and it was used for 95% of my shots on the trip. I used it with a 30D which being a 1.6 frame gave me an effective 640mm reach. Most of the time I only used it to 350mm and at f8 it is really very very sharp. I just loved the lens and would not part with it for anything.

I was a PENTAX film SLR user and the Canon 30D is my first DSLR. It was a big decison to change (with all my old lens inventory etc) and having waited a long time I finally took the plunge. Now I am so happy. I use it for wildlife photography and it has performed like a dream. Virtually instant on, and ability to quicky shoot a subject is great. I found the Servo focus mode works really nicely on birds in flight shots.
Canon CMOS sensor is superb at high ISO and one can easily shoot upto 800ISO, and also 1600ISO is ok.
The larger LCD is really very helpful when you learn to use the histogram and the burnt out highlights etc it really make a difference.
