I was extremely skeptical of this lens originally, especially when I found out it didnt have IS..I even bought a Tamron 24-70 which I thought was excellent but it kept gnawing at me to try the Canon especially after some outstanding reviews.I sold my Tamron and bought the Canon and couldnt be happier....the weight is much better than the original Canon...the AF is lightening fast and IQ is right up there with the 70-200 IS which is the best zoom lens I have ever used!My only complaint is the lack of IS which does disappoint me but I will have to live with that...the cost?prohibitive but I guess you have to pay to play!...great lens!

I have only had the camera for a very short time but in a nutshell to me it is a 5D3 on steroids....everything good about the 5D3 is a little better on the 1DX...AF is a little faster, low light performance is a little better...high ISO performance is a little better....add it all up and you have a beast..my lenses seem more accurate and a bit faster to focus with the 1DX....best camera I have had the pleasure of using..my guess is the longer i use it the more magical qualities i will find!

I have not been a big fan of Sigma lenses until I tried this lens.I bought an outstanding copy from a trusted member here and have been very impressed. The lens is extremely sharp wide open and focuses faster than the great Canon 85L...I suppose those who got copies with focus problems might disagree but I think this is an outstanding value lens.If Sigma could do away with the consistency issues they seem to have from lens to lens I think they might well make inroads into the market on a greater scale. That said,if you get a good copy of this lens it is a big winner!

How often do you buy a Canon lens for 199 dollars and feel you have bought a quality product?I have all kinds of L lenses and yet i love this little lens.It is a little hard to get used to its appearance on my 1D4 and 5D3 but it is sharp and quick to focus and a pleasure to use...my only complaint is the 2.8 but I guess thats the price you pay for the size and cost!Highly recommended!

I currently own both the 1d4 and the 5D3...the combo is perfect for me.I owned the 1D3 earlier and liked it but was always a little concerned about the AF issues...with the 1D4 I am confident of AF in all situations and the high ISO performance is outstanding! The increase in MP is a positive as well...the 1D4 has all the attributes of the 1 series and is a great versatile tool for photographers needing to be able to shoot sports as well as portraits etc.....since this may well be the last 1.3 crop body canon makes I am glad I got one now....

I was a big fan of the 5D2 but 3 years later this is a worthy upgrade...the AF is head and shoulders better, the low light sensitivity and high ISO levels are outstanding and image quality remains top notch.Would I have liked it to have been a bit cheaper?Yes,but I can say that about most every piece of tech gear I buy sadly. All in all a great upgrade!

I have been on the fence concerning this lens for some time but I finally decided to take the plunge when I got the chance to buy a second hand copy.I must say i am very impressed. The lens fits a niche for me,a long range telephoto lens that is not only sharp and quick to focus but also extremely easy to carry around due to its size and weight......a winner !

I must admit I have been shocked as to how good this camera actually is....I have always thought of 1.6 crop cameras as second cameras with tons of compromises but this is the first crop camera I really like..the build quality is outstanding...the AF system is first rate and having 18MP on a 1.6 crop really allows you to shoot without resorting to 1.4 or 2.0 extenders......I have owned all versions of the 1 series and currently own the 5D MKII and this camera holds its own....it isnt a 1 series and of course there are compromises but it is good enough in all aspects as to make it a camera a pro could and would use....well done!

I traded up from my version 1 and couldnt be happier...yes,the lens is expensive but canon has really got a winner on their hands with this lens.In the past I always regarded zoom lenses as problematic when shooting wide open but no longer...at 2.8 this lens as damn close to prime quality and the IS is fantastic....still big and heavy but what can you do about that?there is always the 4.0 version for those wanting to carry the smaller and lighter lens....I look forward to the 24-70 upgrade now as well!

the whole soap opera with the servo AF issue
|
|
I decided to wait to review the markIII because of all of the turmoil regarding the servo AF and because I wanted to make sure I was describing a unit that had the sub mirror fix along with the firmware fix.....for background let me state that i did not experience the problems spoken of before the fix and have had no problems to speak of since.I have owned the markII and currently own the 40d as well as the 5d....the markIII is the best camera I have owned without question and the only criticism I might put forth is that the price given the market today is probably a bit too high...that said,I do recognize that if one had gotten a unit that didnt function properly I understnd that they would not feel quite the same way...I can only comment upon my personal experience.I also do beleive that the markIII has become the most scrutinized camera ever and as a result will probably always have a stigma attached to it...

cost,size,relatively slow AF

I sold my 85L version 1 to get this newer version as soons as i saw the price drop to a more reasonable level...i loved the version 1 and this one is even better...faster AF and the very same razor sharp wide open performance...expensive but like everything else you get what you pay for...highly recommended

I received this new version of the old favorite and in my limited testing and use i am very pleased.I owned the non IS version for years and loved it but the chance to upgrade a classic to a 4 stop IS version was too much for me to pass up.This new lens seems to have kept all of the positives of the old version....sharpness,size,build quality, fast auto focus and now add a terrific IS system which really works as stated. If you own or owned the original you will love the new IS version...well,everything but the price!...that said if you can justify the price i think you will be very happy...the perfect travel lens
