Tamron 28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD VC AF

Review Date: Sep 20, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $375.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Light weight, compact, great zoom range with vibration control.
Gets a little soft at the extremes.

I got my wife a Canon Xsi so she could shoot with me. She loves the camera but the kit lens didn't reach out to the focal lengths she wanted. I let her shoot my 100-400 F4.5 L and it was too heavy and long. She tried the 24-105 F4 but it didn't have the reach and range she wanted and it was too heavy. I found this lens on eBay for $375. and figured I would give it a try. She fell in love with the lens and uses it daily. We go birding in kayaks and she can handle the weight comfortably and has gotten some fantastic shots right next to me and my 400 F4 DO on a 5D. The body is plastic but that's why it is lightweight. and the VC works great. Yes, it gets a little soft at 28 to 40 and 250 to 300 but what the heck, she is out there shooting with me with a little compact lightweight lens that gives her some fabulous shots!

Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye

Review Date: Apr 6, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $500.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp, sharp images and fun to play with.

I borrowed one from a friend when I went on a cruise last fall. Used it a bit on the cruise but was only impressed when I got home and downloaded images to the computer. Bought one for myself and slowly beginning to to learn it's versatility. It is fun to include the sun into your images and I look forward to dark night full sky shots this summer.

Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM

Review Date: Apr 4, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $3,200.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Light weight, small, fast focusing and great image stabilization for effective hand holdiing.
Needs a little post processing contrast adjustment.

I bought the lens on e-Bay for cheap just to try it out. I love this lens for it's strengths, light weight and smaller size and wouldn't trade it for anything else. It's a natural for birding and sports photography. The slight lack of contrast never bothered me and the quality compared with the 300 2.8 is all there. You really appriciate this lens when you are sitting in a kayak under a Osprey nest for a couple of hours. I rated the build quality a little low because it actually fell apart one day at the screws holding the body to the lens. I found out later that this is not that uncommon with all Canon lenses.
