I bought this lens as an upgrade to the Canon EF 18-55mm without having to go all the way for one of the f2.8 lenses.
This lens fit the bill perfectly, it had enough features over the Canon, faster focussing, wider apertures, built in hood, no rotating front on zoom/focussing which allowed me to fit a circular polarizer on the front.
I use this lens primarily for portraiture work at smaller apertures, f5.6 onwards and it performs brilliantly. I am a bit hesitant at using it at f2.8 on 18mm as the corners are a quite soft and there is a fair bit of distortion and CA.
I find that at wide open past 20mm it is acceptable.
