Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

100-400
Review Date: Jan 12, 2022 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Another Canon "great". Razor sharp, focuses fast and close. Solid build. great all-around lens.
Cons:

Beats the old one hands down. Sharp! Good bokeh, and color rendition. Not a dust pump. Focuses close. Shot alot of Rose parade float detail. Surprisingly good up close! I've shot the stealth bomber flyover en route to the rose parade handheld a few times (see below). This thing shines. Great price for what it is, and can be found used to save even more. Have both the 70-200 2.8 II and this. This gets more use.

Note: IS and AF will work with RF bodies with 1.4x and 2x version 2 (NOT Version 3) extenders stacked, making a useful outdoors superzoom with RF > EF convertor.

Pros: Creamy, dreamy bokeh. Great color rendition. really a "fine art" feel. Definitely need to know how to use it, but it gives excellent results - if you take your time.
Cons:
heavy, but not a big deal.

Definitely not a run and gun type of lens. take your time, and it'll give you good results. Very creamy - backgrounds disappear. Good heavy build quality. not a daily driver, so to speak, but beats the 1.4 hands down. Interesting sidenote: rediscovered this lens with the R6. focuses faster and more precisely through the convertor than it did through an ef body.

Got a great deal used. needed to have the filter ring replaced and the lens serviced. Inexpensive fix.

Pros: Amazing lens. My grab and go.
Cons:
none, other than I didn't get it soon enough!

You can never go wrong with this lens. (as long as you're using it as intended!) sharp, great bokeh, color rendition. fast autofocus. Goes on every shoot. Can't say enough about it.

Pros: Sharp & Light -both in weight and $$
Cons:
Zero

Amazing alternative to the 2.8 if your budget won't allow. IS gets you around the higher f stop in most circumstances.Sharp, quick autofocus. Great color rendition, great bokeh, etc. Really hard to go wrong with it. Great deals can be had used if you're patient.

Side benefit: Uses less expensive 77mm filter if you're into that.

Pros: Nothing else like it. Very specific use - great for that.
Cons:
Heavy, but that's expected.

Absolutely amazing lens - for what it's intended. Razor sharp. But there's definitely a learning curve, so be patient and you will get great results. Not a general use item, but great for up close items in confined spaces. (shot some Rose Parade floats in various stages of construction inside the float barn. with very limited space. great for exotic cars as well, if you're going for a special look.) Worked great on EF series bodies and now my R6 through the Canon RF > EF convertor. A little odd shape-wise, but it was easy to create a custom carrying case with Pick & pluck foam (Pelican 1300) for transportation.

Pros: Great addition to the collection
Cons:

Absolutely stunning. there's just "Somethjing about it thatthe whole is nore than the sum of the parts. Fasntastic bokeh, sharp, great color. makes things "pop". Works great on EF bodies (5d3&4) and r6 with adapter. I even bought a second when I found it used - just sat in the showcase for some reason. ($380 - couldn't resist)
