Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Review Date: Apr 8, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,130.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: incredible contrast & sharpness; weather-sealing; speed
heavy, huge hood

I've had this lens for almost 3 months and it is on my 10D more than any other lens. Although there are times when I take my old 28-135 instead due to the weight and size difference, those times are becoming much less frequent. I was walking in downtown San Francisco this afternoon for a few hours with the lens and a briefcase and somehow survived without needing first aid (as some posts would imply).

There is a 3-D quality to the pictures this lens takes that has to be seen to be believed. On a 1.6 crop camera this is an ideal walkaround lens if you shoot candid portraits, street scenes, etc. There are a few occasions when I miss the extra reach of the 28-135, but much more often the 24mm on the wide end and/or the f/2.8 gets me more shots...and the quality difference is pretty dramatic.

Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical RF

Review Date: Jan 9, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $288.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Sharp images, good color & contrast, wide aperture
manual focus is a pain

I bought this lens because my wide angle zoom, Canon's 17-40 f/4, is not very usable for the kind of indoor, available light shots that I frequently take. Unlike the comments I read in some other forums, the autofocus is neither very noisy nor slow enough to notice.

I've mainly used it for indoor candids and it has served me well (so far only on my 10D where it has an effective length of 32mm). I've taken a number of pictures between f/2.0 and f/2.8 at 1/60 and ISO 800 - while the 2.0 shots are soft, they are shots I would never have gotten at all with the 17-40. The few outdoor shots I've taken were stopped down to f/8 and they were very nice.

I was originally concerned about Sigma quality (since all my other lenses are Canons) but I am quite happy with the lens.
