Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Review Date: Nov 14, 2016 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp as a tack, good fast focusing
Big, heavy, (compared to non L version)

I bought this because I do a bit of "birding" and I wanted a long lens. The non "L" version was a bit disappointing. This is substantially bulkier, and heavier but oh my, it is terrific! Generally very sharp at all focal lengths and apertures I use it as a close up (not macro) at 70mm and it is still fantastic! I got a brilliant deal at 550 plus the other lens, well chuffed. Use it with APS C 70D

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

Pros: FANTASTIC quality for the money! God range when used alongside 17-85 lens, light and easy to use.
Not much info on lens (No fucus distance for instance)

This lens is a must at the price, fantastic IQ, range is perfect for a n EFS (Roughly 16-28 if you scale up to a full frame equivalent) it is pretty quick anyway and the IS works. Rendition is good and although there is a little distortion it is wall within what you would expect from ANY lens at this angle - remember the corners of the picture ARE much further from the sensor plane than the middle for a flat object - so they will seem that way.

Don't take my word for it - here is a Flickr album all with this lens on an EOS 70D

Then prize a few quid form your wallet and buy one! You won't regret it!

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Pros: Light, IS, reasonably cheap decent quality, range
Not pin sharp (but not bad

I have a 17-40L to compare this to, and OK it is sharp and beautiful, this lens is not as good but it has twice the range and was half the price. Honestly it is brilliant value and gets good enough results when the L is too slow for the light thanks to the IS. Buy this one and get fair results, even if it does feel a little light it is a sound lens!

Canon EOS 20D

Pros: Fast, good quality pics, flexible
Heavy, sometimes menus can be baffling

I came to this Digital SLR after a long line of Canon Cameras, all good in their own way AE1, T90, EOS 5. This is really good to use, at least as good as the 5. Image quality is excellent even at high ASA steeings (though not as stunning as at ASA100). The internal flash is not as good as the 5, though (Picky or what). What i really like is the feeling of having almost any film I want in the camera at any time, turn up the sensitivity, turn down th contrast, less saturated skintones etc, etc, cacn anybody tell me the settings for "Vericolor". I use a 17-40L mostly, but have a 28-105 from the EOS 5 which is much lighter, and a 70-210 (all Canon) which gives brilliant range with 1.6 "magnification" but the quality, I took it on an Under 8's rugby tour, one pic made it worth the money!
