Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Review Date: Oct 23, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $400.00 | Rating: 6

Pros: Very practical zoom range, Image Stabilisation
Purple fringing (really bad) and softness towards the edges

I have recently acquired my "backup" camera Canon EOS 20D and the lens came as part of the kit. It's zoom makes the lens far more practical than EF-S 18-55 as previously offered with 300D and IS (image stabilisation) is a real bonus. Colour and contrast of images produced are very good. The lens suffers from serious purple fringing problem, though. In addition, when wide open, there is visible softness of the image towards its edges and on left side of frame in particular.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM

Review Date: Aug 6, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,100.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Lightweight, compact. Really compact for the focal range it delivers. New generatin Image Stabilizer is absolutely flawless. When fully open, you can count on steady 300mm shots at 1/60s. Perfect second all-arounder lens. In fact apart form 17-40 F4 lens this is the only lens I carry in my daily backpack with Canon 300D digital SLR.
Soft, soft, much softer than Canon's "L" series zooms or primes. Requires good light conditions to deliver punchy colour and contrast. In less favourable light colour and sharpness tend to be flat.

Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM

Review Date: May 16, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Stunningly sharp, light for the size you are about to carry and easy to handle

I have added this lens to my photo equipment bag to provide better alternative to 300mm F2.8 IS with 1.4x extender. I needed a lens that could be as sharp as tack yet would not break my back when carried around. I also wanted a lens that I could use hand held or with monopod only. Have not been disappointed since then. This is an incredible lens with highest quality glass, faultless image stabiliser that reproduces fantastic detail, contrast and colour of the scene you're shooting. Highly recommended.
