Bought this lens as a single-lens solution for a full-frame Nikon when travelling, particularly by air when space/weight is limited. Have not been disappointed.
Not quite as sharp as a 2.8 but it's pretty good nonetheless, with good colour rendering and contrast. And at last it's a Tamron lens that does not overexpose on a Nikon.

After several DX models my introduction to full-frame photography with a Nikon D610 convinced me that this was the way to go. But good as it is, the D610 is still an entry level camera and lacks some of the build quality and functionality of the higher end models. The D810 on the other hand is built like a brick but is awkward to handle and eats memory cards, and who wants to lug a brick around all day?
This is my seventh DSLR and one that is shaping up to become a keeper.

Big and heavy, but first class IQ. Some distortion at wide angle also vignetting if hood is fitted. Excellent neutral colour rendition and contrast. Can't be beaten at this price.
Update: Have noticed that at f/2.8 exposure is spot on using standard camera settings but at smaller apertures the lens consistently overexposes by 0.7EV. An Internet search reveals that this is a common but annoying fault with Tamron lenses.

This is my sixth Nikon DSLR and the best so far. I love the lack of image noise and the clarity of the image, and I like that I can run both my D7100 and the D610 using the same batteries and controls. The battery seems to last much longer on the D610. They are similar in size and weight but the D610 has better noise control and image quality.
I was a bit worried about the dust problem associated with the previous version, the D600, but despite changing lenses constantly I have yet to find any evidence of dust with this camera.

I bought this lens to replace a clunky and ageing Nikon 18-200vr. Although all zooms are a compromise, I have a growing suspicion that Nikon zooms are not as good as they ought to be having had several recently that though well-built were disappointing image-wise. I do not think they are worth the money any more. Most of my zooms now are Sigma, though Nikon still make the best prime lenses.
The Sigma is sharper than the Nikon, and follows the current trend in DSLRs by being lighter and smaller, and is a better all round lens for travel. The addition of a close focus facility is a bonus. Image stabilisation works well.
My only criticism so far is that the focus ring is too highly geared; when using the lens on manual, getting accurate focus is tricky and requires some fine movements.
Overall it is a fine addition to my lens bag.
(Just heard it has been discontinued - get one while you can at knock-down prices.)

Super little lens, sharp right across from corner to corner, fast focus. Great fun when used correctly.
I use it with Nikon DSLRs and post-processing software 'Hemi fisheye' for great results.
