Nikon 105mm f/2.8D AF Micro

Review Date: Jul 3, 2003 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $650.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp, excellent contrast, 1:1 with no accessories, sharp (did I mention it was sharp?)
AF slow, expensive compared to Sigma, Tamron. A bit too sharp for portrait work.

This is a fantastic lens for macro work. AF is painfully slow, although when working with macro I very rarely use AF. The extra focal length is useful when shooting insects & other things that move. Works very well with the SB-29 macro ring light. For portrait use, the focal length is good, but the lens is sharper than most people like. You may have to soften the image with filters or digitally.

Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S

Review Date: May 5, 2003 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,400.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Great optics, fast focus
heavy, expensive

Probably my most used lens, especially on the D100 where it's the equivelant of a 24-48 (approx). Excellent color, good edge sharpness on 35mm.

Nikon 14mm f/2.8D ED AF Nikkor

Review Date: Apr 25, 2003 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,400.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Awesome coverage on 35mm, true wide angle on digital. Great build quality, very little flair problem, good corner sharpness
Heavy, expensive

I looked at the Nikon and the Sigma 14mm before buying. The Nikon was so much better with flair and edge sharpness. Even though it cost twice as much, it's worth it. The lens is big and heavy. If you shoot exclusively digital, it might be worth waiting for the 12-24 DX lens. If you shoot wide angle, for now this is the best thing out there!

Nikon SB-80DX AF Speedlight

Review Date: Apr 25, 2003 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $350.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Improved mounting lock, wider angle support with included diffuser, wireless support.
None really

The SB80DX is a much improved flash over the SB28DX. If you shoot Nikon digital, this is the flash to get. Very consistant results, the included diffuser (similar to the Stoffen Omnibounce) gives good results with wider angles, and the wireless function is great.
