Pros:

Lighter weight than my 28/70;very sharp at the edges;makes for a very nice walkaround with the1/2 macro a plus.

For me there really isn't any. Maybe for some the front element extending zoomed but it doesn't bother me.

This is the second one I've had after mistakenly selling the first. Though my 28/70 is pretty much my meat and potatoes lens this is no slouch in any respect and I'm more inclined to use it for a walkaround though I have made many of my best prints with this lens.
The first worked very well on DX (D50 and D1X) taking into account the angle of view and this one is very much at home on FX (D700)
I've used it for portraits, landscape, still life and macro pretty much does it all.

Low light AF on D1X excellent, Build is what I've come to expect from this line from Tokina = Tough, MF mechanism works very well. AF lock speeds things up very well in that area. It has exhibited VG IQ throughout it's range.

So far I have used this lens for small product photography, head, head/shoulders and to waist portraiture, low light club shooting a band.
I was able to get tight in on the drummer back in the hole with VG results. Actually, I also used a Tokina ATXPRO 165 for the rest of the shots. The band loves the pictures as does the people I've used it to shoot product for and the parents of the student.
The OOF areas are creamy and not harsh. Color and contrast are VG. Though I've tried it has not exhibited any fringing. All in all it has done everything well. I got this at the recommendation of my camera shop guy and darn, he was right again.

Weight, size, focusing ability. Colors and contrast are nicely rendered with my D1X. Much better built and more robust than the Tamron or Sigma counterparts. 77mm filter thread is a + for me at it matches my other nikkors.
Operates smooth and nice with a good feel. Non-rotating front element.

Barrel extension may be an off for some but doesn't bother me. Some vignetting at 2.8 and wide but is easily corrected in PPing as is some barrel distortion.

I think I bought the first one off of B&H's shelf over a year ago before anything was written about it. At the time I needed something in this focal range but I couldn't afford the Nikkor 17-35 and didn't want the 17-55 and Tamron and Sigma weren't in the running.
I glad I got this as it has been a very good lens and I have had it twice now. I was able to get the 17-35 that I wanted and sold this to a photographer friend. With health and financial issues I bought it back from him and use it extensively.

AFS, easy to handle, sharp throughout pretty much the range, images are great and the prints wonderful. Build quality is tough, (I dropped it once no issues TG) 77mm which matches my other glass and keeps the filters down to a dull roar.

Can't really think of any. Some consider this pricey but I'd rather spend it on this than on a 17-55.

Now that the new syndrome has died down a bit I was able to compare my 28-70 with a 24-70 early on for a good run. Though another wonderful lens the 24-70 didn't show me enough improvement in final print to where I wanted to change. My 28-70 has been great all the way around and pretty much lives on the camera. There would have to be a much bigger improvement for a lens in this F/L for me to want to change. And no, I'm not talking about adding VR.

Build:No rubber problems Body solid and everything is to hand and fingers.
Raw is excellent. I've only shot a couple of JPG but they look ok too. Startup is fast. Focus is fast with my glass and accurate.

Battery life is not as good as the more modern types but a bit over blown IMO. I get BatteryBarn Bats and they serve very well.

I just gave it a 10. It does what it should when it should do it. No muss or fuss. I just flat like the IQ and colors overall. Very pleasing to my eyes. Don't bother chimping too much. The LCD images will depress you but when you open them up they look great. It does have a tendency to underexpose but that is easily compensated for.
It may not be a speed demon but I use it for sports and it does well for me. It fits and feels well in my hands and glass balances nicely and the heft keeps things stable and smooth.
All in all its still a wonderful body and at the price you just can't beat it. I got a this one last July 07 for a bit over $600 with a couple of batteries, charger, AC adapter and all the boxes. It had exceptionally little usage and except for a very little dust looked and checked out like brand new. I bought 3 B/B batteries @ 39ea. and haven't had any issues really.

Build, feel, sharpness, quality, contrast, sharpness, focusing, weight not an issue, subject isolation, sharpness. All of the attributes one would expect out of a lens of this quality. Did I mention sharpness through out it's range?

Is this lens worth the price over the 1.8 that is almost as good? If you aren't satisfied with "almost as good" and want a no holds bared prime lens in this focal length then yes.
Since getting this lens in Dec. it stays on the the camera and I do everything with it I can. It is for me a joy to use but took a bit of learning to use it well and I am still and always learning.
Not one regret what so ever.
