Nikon 105mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor

Review Date: Mar 12, 2012 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $625.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp!

I've looked at this lens for a long time but finally jumped in and bought one, mainly for detail shots of rings, jewellery, flowers and all other details @ weddings.

It's super sharp and fast to focus on both D300 & D700.

I was a little perplexed when I couldn't dial the lens down to f2.8 but realised this is focus distance dependant and Nikon are showing you the real f stop value rather that hiding the fact that it does change (like other manufacturers do).

I wish I'd bought this a long time ago.

Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM

Review Date: Nov 2, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 3

Pros: The zoom range
The image quality

My son-in-law lent me one of these on his 40D, so I thought I'd have a play with it. To keep things in perspective I'm used to L class lenses, 24-70L, 70-200 f2.8 L IS II etc, so this was an interesting test for me.

The build quality was better than expected and the lens feels chunky and smooth to zoom.

The f5.6 is of course standard for consumer lenses, and even indoors with flash is good enough. If course, that assumes you learn how to use flash properly and don't just point it at the subject Wink

This lens was soft compared to the stuff I used to, but then it's also 1/6 of the cost as well.

For a consumer walkabout travel lens this is a reasonable choice, but honestly, I would never buy one if you can afford something better.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Review Date: Sep 28, 2010 Recommend? no | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 4

Pros: It's Cheap.
Soft, massive barrel distortion. The manual focus ring is not smooth and is right on the front of the lens.

I had one of these a couple of years ago, and remember it being better than this. I just recently came back to Canon from Nikon (for the video features) and the cheap Nikon 50 completely blows this one away, in build quality and IQ. Shame, because this is one of the most recommended lenses.

I took mine back and swapped for the f1.4 instead.
