Pros:

Typical L quality. Solidly built, sharp, colorful and contrasty from wide open. Accurate focus thank to a wonderful USM motor. Lightweight.

I just picked this pristine copy up used on Craigslist for $470.00. Needless to say I'm very happy. I have had and now selling a Tamron 17-35. When I purchased that Tamron I sampled several lenses at my local camera store and took the sharpest copy. I can now honestly say the Tamron doesn't hold a candle to the 17-40L. When people compare the two they obviously have the Tamron and are wishing they had this.

I can see I'm not the only one who suffered with Tamron's crappy Q/A. My first copy was terrible. After sending it back to Tamron twice they hand picked me another. This one is very nice. When I first saw the pics I couldn't believe the difference! Sharp and contrasty from wide open and on. I can't say how it will perform on a full frame but it works great on my 20/40D's.
If I had to due it all again I would go for the Canon 17-40L. It is built much better and the USM motor is much faster/quieter/ and more accurate. From what I read it will be a much better choice on a full frame which I will eventually have. (5DII  )Heck, I still might go that route!

Very sharp and contrasty across its full range. IS is awesome. Uses standard 77mm filters like my other two L lenses. USM is fast, accurate and silent. Much lighter than my 24-70 f/2.8L. Ultimate walk around general usage lens for me.

Not really a justified negative but if I had to complain f/2.8 would be the icing on the cake.Then I would complain about the weight.

I recently picked this lens up from a local Craigs List seller $700.00 w/B+W Polarizer "Pro"and I'm very happy with it. My longtime friend 24-70 f/2.8L will now either head to the safe and may even eventually get sold. The difference in weight is definitely worth the 1 stop loss for me and the IS works great. From f/4 and up it is very sharp. I could easily compare this to my 70-200 f2.8L any day!

Coming form 20D many needed improvements. ISO displayed in viewfinder and top of body. LiveView, larger LCD, AF On button DigicIII, 14bit, faster and quieter.

Had to send to Canon for front focus issues. Best Buy exchanged two bodies. All of them had the same problem. Unreal! Finally decided to send it into Canon Irvine, CA. Now focus is perfect.

Poor QA. Somewhat slow focus. Had to send back to Tamron twice to get problems resolved.

My first copy of this lense had major focus issues on my 20D. It just could not focus and give a sharp picture consistently. Sent it to Tamron, (NY) four weeks later recieved it back and still crappy. They said it was calibrated to factory specs. They paid for return shipment back to them. Their service manager told me his head tech will get a few lenses from the warehouse, compare them, calibrate/check the best one and send it to me. I guess they are aware of the QA also. After one week they UPS overnighted me another lense. This one is simply awsome. Very sharp and contrasty at all focal lengths and apertures. So sharp that I can't see any difference between f2.8 and f8 unless I look out towards the edge.
Although the first one left a bad taste in my mouth Tamron made it good and took care of me. Excellent customer service goes a long way! I would have rated this lense a 9 if it weren't for the aggrivation of a bad copy.
Now I can start enjoying this lense.

I'm simply floored at how sharp and crisp the pics this lense produces straight out of the camera all apertures all lenghts. The fucusing is very fast and very accurate something I'm not used to with my Tamron 17-35 and 28-75 f2.8. Now I have to decide which Tamron goes first. I have the fever!!

Very sharp, at all lenghts and apertures, great contrast and color. Constant 2.8. Not to heavy and very small for such a fast lense. Focus is fast (not quit USM fast) but fast enough for anything I could imagine. Focus is pretty silent also. Contruction is pretty solid. For the price nothing comes close!! This lense will be on my 20D 90% of the time.

Slight front focus confirmed wide open. Worse around 50mm for some reason. Spoke to manager at Tamron service in NY and he said to mail it and and after it's calibrated on their 20D he garuntees it will be perfect. We shall see?
