Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]

Review Date: Mar 14, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $315.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: f2.8 zoom in a compact size for 1/3 the price of the Nikon.
Focus not quite as fast as AF-S.

Great bang for your buck. This is a f2.8 zoom that goes toe to toe with the Nikon equivalent. It is significantly smaller than the Nikon also, which makes for easier packing. Mine does not have the built in motor and focuses much faster than the BIM and VC versions (and much more quietly).

The filter size is a bit oddball - would have preferred another 77mm to match my other lenses. Of course this would go against the whole small package idea, so you can't have everything. Great purchase - you won't regret it.

Nikon 35mm f/2D AF Nikkor

Review Date: May 20, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $250.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Small, fast, nice bokeh
Wish it was a 1.4

This thing is a gem. I sold my 35 1.8G and kept this one in its stead. It's tiny, sharp, AF is faster than the 35 1.8G, has a classic feel to it. I find the bokeh really nice too, nice and smooth. I shoot it wide open without hesitation.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM

Review Date: Apr 21, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $660.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Fast focusing, sharp, creamy bokeh.
77mm diameter lens + hood much bigger than competition

Purchased new for 440 in EU. This is the fastest focusing lens in my bag. Bokeh is gorgeous, and focus is spot on. The focus is a bit "jumpy" I'd say when tracking a focus point. Never have a complain when I reach for it. Shoot it wide open and never look back.

Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II

Review Date: Apr 14, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $300.00 | Rating: 6

Pros: Light, small, and flexible zoom range
Really slow focusing, poor tele IQ

Purchased new, Nov '06. Used as a single lens kit for 2 years before I knew better.

Good travel lens - one lens fits all. It was a great learning tool, and I got many shots I wouldn't have simply because I had the zoom range to be prepared. As far as image quality, pictures are really soft on the long end, and barrel distortion is significant on the wide end. The lens is really slow to focus and hunts badly in poor light. I've missed many shots waiting for the focus ring to come around. Focus motor is very loud as well. A lot of lens for the price, but there are compromises in all areas.
