it's the best general Canon lens ever. It's good for everything- reportage, weddings (you have just one lens- it you can use it for the whole day), family and children photography.
Food photography is also ok with this, but anyway i would want some macro lens for the best food pics.

The ratio between price and quality of pictures is fabulous

this is on one of oldest and the cheapest lens (beside 50mm 1.8).
Though the image quality, sharpness and blur are just excellent.
I also own Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II L, but for the general portraits use 85mm in most cases.
