Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS

Review Date: Apr 1, 2013 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 5

Pros: Average good results, well build, smooth use of rings to focus.
Severe obtical faults.

Most reviews of the Canon Canon 24-70mm f/4 L IS lens are not complete and much to positive.
This lens suffers from a severe obtical problem.
When (with manual focus) stopping down, the point of focus shifts backwards, see file below.
So, if you use a tripod and try to make a portrait you need to focus again when stopping up or down.
Also on full frame and wide angle there's very much vigniting from f4 - f8.
I hadn't expected this problem in such a costly lens. Not a lens for canon to be proud of.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Pros: Excellent for use with small sensor cameras.
Strong vignetting by using full frame camera.

I own this lens for about 1 year and made many fine portrets with it (Canon 5dm2), but most of them were cut out. Using it outdoors was a disaster. On the long side of the lens the photo shows a strong vignetting. If you want an example, look at the photo I made today: ISO400, 1/1000, f/5.6, focus length 140mm.

Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM

Pros: Nice looking.
Poor sharpness, pricey

I own this lens since May 2006 and had no problems with dust at all. The problem with this lens is its poor image quality. Not as sharp as I like it and on the wide-angle side much distortion. A pricey lens like this should do much better.
I don't see much difference with the kitlens.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Pros: Reliable, almost no hunting, sharp, inner focusing, price.

I own this lens for 9 months now and made more then a thousand photos with it on a 30D body. I'm a photographer of insects and almost always the 25 extension EF25 is mounted too.
In normal light there's no hunting using AF on the shortest distance switch. The body and lens are very reliable. I don't have any complaints. It gives me sharp photos with a good contrast and colour saturation. That's all I want.
