Specifications:
A highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability. Images are sharp and clear at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the lens has been designed to give beautiful background blur. Since the front lens group does not rotate during focusing special filter effects are not affected.

Pros: This is LITERALLY my favorite lens! It has amazing bokeh without the price tag.
Cons:
I see some chromatic aberration but even then, I don't feel like it's terrible at all.

This is LITERALLY my favorite lens! It has amazing bokeh without the price tag. Without being up close and personal, it gets those close-up couple shots and is just beautiful!

Pros: I really love this lens all around, especially for the price. It delivers sharp images with lovely compression. The AF is fairly fast and there is minimal chromatic aberration.
Cons:
Not the most durable lens... It has broken twice in 3 years under moderately heavy use, though I take very good care of my gear.

Pros: moderate size and weight for this focal length, lovely progression of shapness (dreamy look at f/1.8 progressing to slightly dreamy at f/2.2 and flawless sharp from f/2.8 on), fast AF with traditional AF, fast enough through LV, good colours for a portrait lens (neutral temperature, not too punchy)
Cons:
it has a lot of chromatic aberration at f<2.8

very enjoyable lens for nature details on crop body (750D) where it gives the equivalent of 135mm lens. very decent sharpness at low appertures, good colour, pleasant bokeh (not stunning but very neutral). it has the feeling of an old prime with natural sharpness and no fancy lenses to give it extra punch. but with AF

Pros: The ratio between price and quality of pictures is fabulous
Cons:
Lack weatherdust resistant elements

this is on one of oldest and the cheapest lens (beside 50mm 1.8).
Though the image quality, sharpness and blur are just excellent.
I also own Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II L, but for the general portraits use 85mm in most cases.
The portrait pics in this gallery http://www.cherkasovalex.com/svadby/anna-max/ for example was made with 85mm.
And most close-up portraits <a href="http://www.cherkasovalex.com/portfolio/portrety/">here</a> too.

Pros: Very fast AF, sharp at 2.0
Cons:
Soft wide open and fringing wide open.

Fastest AF of any lens I've used. Great for indoor sports, especially if not close to the action. I use the 50 when sitting on the baseline, but switch to this if shooting from sidelines or a upper level. Also great for portraits. Color is not quite as good as my 50 or some L zooms, but easily fixable PP.

Pros: Very very sharp lighweight price
Cons:

After having it twice I tested it side by side with the overpriced 85L, i'll keep the L and sold the 1.8. The L has way better colours, contrast, microcontrast and the legendary f1.2 dof/bokeh. Other brands don't make f1.2 lenses, so it's a legendary collectors gem for future allready. The Sigma 85 1.4 is probably also good, but sometimes you read about inconsistent AF copies. I would only buy the Sigma if they make a 85 1.4 Art (I have the 35 & 50 Art allready, they are the best glass ever!).

Pros: Light, small, cheap, excellent image quality, fast AF, reliable, consistent
Cons:
None

I bought this lens on a whim to give me something new to play with because a new 'L' lens I'd ordered hadn't shown up. It has since become possibly my favourite lens.

It is now the fastest lens I own, and the only lens with which I find that 1/8000 shutter speeds sometimes aren't fast enough. It can be used in very low light.

The image quality is nothing short of amazing. With some recent portrait work, I did a direct comparison with this 'old' lens and Canon's latest EF 100mm f/2.8L IS macro lens.

The shots using the new 100mm macro lens were good, but the ones using the 85mm had the edge.

It is extremely sharp and produces wonderful colour, contrast and bokeh. The AF is fast and accurate. With the wide aperture I don't find myself wanting or needing IS.

The minimum focusing distance is 2.8ft, but add an extension tube to reduce the minimum focusing distance and you have a cheap - but very competent - entry level macro lens.

Even with 100% crops of macro shots using a 25mm extension tube the 85mm f/1.8 loses none of its sharpness.

With portrait work now, this is my first choice lens - even though I have 'L' lenses to choose from.

I really can't praise it enough, and the more I use it, the more I like it.

Pros: Very fast and accurate AF, excellent sharpness, nice bokeh, cheap, small and lightweight... what else can you ask for?
Cons:
None, really.

A must have in every amateur portrait photographer bag.
You can't go wrong with this lens. It's incredibly fast to focus (very accurate too) and delivers fantastic results!
The bokeh is very nice and sharpness, color and contrast are very satisfying also.
Moreover it is cheap, small and light. Other 85mm alternatives are so much more expensive and heavy, therefore out of question for me (I'm just an enthusiastic photographer).
I can't really mention something bad about this lens (relevant at least). Maybe just the fact that the lens shows some CA but nothing serious from my perspective.
Love this lens!

Pros: Sharp, lightweight, fast AF, cheap, good for sports
Cons:
Purple CA bomb, dull colours

It's a good beginners portraitlens and especially good for sports

Pros: 1. Super sharp. 2. Light weight. 3. Decent price.
Cons:

Fantastic lens. Super sharp at all apertures. Light weight and relatively cheap. This is probably my most used lens.

A couple of super sharp examples (on flickr) from this lens...

Pros: Very very sharp lighweight price
Cons:

Pros: Small, light, not-white, sharp, excellent AF, nice background blur
Cons:
Tough to complain at this price. I do find it a bit annoying that Canon does not include a hood with non-L lenses.

Still one of my favorite portrait and indoor action lenses on the 5D3 and possibly Canon's best bang-for-the-buck lens ever.

Pros: Very sharp, good value
Cons:
It's not f/1.2 - joke - seriously if you need razor thin depth of field and are deft enough to know how to do it right, you're probably not reading this post. Doesn't focus that fast

Bokeh/ OOF rendering is not butter smooth as on a Zeiss, say, but is perfectly acceptable

Pros: Wicked Sharp, especially wide open. Great contrast, low distortion, Incredibly fast and accurate AF. Light weight, small.
Cons:
none.

This is an incredible lens. Wicked sharp, and great contrast and colors. The bokeh is is incredible! The AF is fast, accurate, and quiet.

This lens is small and light weight. I normally have it in a jacket pocket when I'm doing street photography so I can swap it with the 50mm that is mounted on the camera.

This lens is great on crop sensor, but shines on a full frame. I normally use this lens on a 5D, but I've used it on crop bodies in the past. This lens is great for just about everything, and is one of my favorite lenses for portraits.

Here are some shots using this lens and a 5D:
