Has a wide range of zoom, which I need for my career.

Cons:

Prefer a lens with a lower F-Stop
|
|
This lens is great when photographing outdoor events during daylight. However, I work in the wedding industry and prefer a lens with a lower F-stop when working in a low light situation. However, it is a good product. I did buy it at a used camera store and bought it out of necessity at the time.

This lens works as described and gives a good range of zoom for a kit lens.

Cons:

Images from this lens aren't stunning, they're functional.
|
|
This lens came with a camera body we purchased. It has bailed us out a couple of times when we had multiple photographers at a shoot needing a wide zoom lens. Overall, though, this lens doesn't produce stunning images very easily at all. It's functional, but not inspiring.

Pros:

Very Sharp images, easy to process
|
Cons:

kinda complicated to operate
|
|
The spicifications are what draws me into this one.
24-105mm. Used on a 1.3x camera it gives angles of view similar to what a 30-132mm lens would give on a 35mm film camera. On a 1.6x camera it gives angles of view similar to what a 39-170mm lens would give on a 35mm film camera.
Very high quality, sharp images though a bit complicated to operate, software support is not as easy too. Been an interior designs, and property styling gold coast photographer, indoor shooting are always my day to day venue, dim lights and darker background is a bit hard to adjust in this model too.

I just purchased this lens from a fellow FM'er and it's done very well for me. It should be noted that my demands are not high, I'm not producing prints that others will purchase and not pixel peeping, but for my needs it's fabulous. It's light enough for me to have as a walk around lens, not intrusive, and has enough of a focal range to allow me a great deal of flexibility framing. I'm shooting with a 6D and find it's plenty wide enough for most every shot. I've not found the f/4 to be limiting yet, but I suppose at some point it may be...bottom line is the 6D is so good at high ISO it's likely not going to be an issue. My subjects are people and places and for that, this lens is very, very good.

I used this lens for 6 years and was lucky to have an extremely good copy (Canon Service told me it is the best they ever had to check). The sharpness is good in the center, best at f5,6. But the corners are a bit soft compared to that and this issue is not correctable with DxO, Nik, PS or other tools.
I did lots of prints from 5D Mark I and II files shot with this lens also in very large sizes like 40x60 inches and even larger and they were pretty good, after pushing sharpness in several steps. The prints were NOT amazingly sharp, but pretty good - bit soft in the corners as already mentioned. For my kind of photography sharpness is not the main focus. But I would definitely not recommend shooting furs with this lens.
I really love the zoom range which gives me good versatility for creative photography without cropping, and I love the IS. AF works ok, too.
BUT: On my last trip the camera suddenly stopped working and showed ERROR 01. The lens suddenly only worked at f4 or in MF/Live view mode. There is a hardware problem with a cable in the lens. This is a known/common issue, you will find different threads in the www about that. Since I can't trust this lens anymore, I cannot recommend buying it - despite its good performance and versatility.

I use it mounted to a Canon MKIII and it is my primary studio and outdoors lens for shooting people.
The IQ is superb, it is a joy to shoot movement with. The colors are phenomenal and the clarity is perfect. Its a lens that demonstrates why you should spend the extra money on your glass, there is just no way to express the value I find in having the color and IQ of this lens, even compared to some of my top of the line (non L Series) primes from Canon.
The IS is a great benefit as well, and it is ultimately why I went with this lens over the 24-70. I just did not need the extra speed, I wanted the IS over this range. I highly recommend it !

I'm in general not a big fan of too wide range zooms as the bring to much distortion and are not as sharp as prime lenses. But I didn't noticed any of these common problem with this one. I didn't used it for a long time but all the photos were tack sharp and the distortion was well controlled. I've stopped using it because I need 2.8 for my documentaries. The difference between 2.8 and 4 is bigger than imagined at first.

I shoot with a 6D and bought this lens with the camera. I also have several other "L" lenses. The 24-105 has been overseas several times and used, informally, for weddings and everything else. Let me say that I am a pixel peeper and my issue with the lens became sharpness. I stopped using it at f4 a long time ago as it was too soft for me. f5.6-f8 are pretty good, but I guess "pretty good" stopped satisfying. I've taken some very nice shots with it, sharp enough and looking good at full size on screen. I'm not damning it outright, but in my heart of hearts, I knew I wanted more and that I could have it, so I tried the 24-70 f4 and it was sharper but some of the reviews put me off because of the softness at 50mm. In the end I bit the bullet and bought the 24-70 f2.8 mkii. A totally satisfying lens regarding IQ. Stabilisation would be nice, but the IQ makes up for it.
So I can give the 24-105 7/10 for IQ. As for convenience, colour, IS, build, reliability ... 10/10.

Pros:

Very versatile focal range.
Effective stabilization - at least 2 stops.
Good and consistent image quality across all focal lengths, although not prime kind of quality (there are no miracles!).
Quiet, fast and reliable AF.
Not too expensive (especially if bought as a kit).
|
Cons:
|
Some distortion @24mm but easily corrected in Post Production.
A bit bulky and a bit heavy but that's the price you pay for such a versatile lens.
I wish it was f/2.8. :)

This lens is very versatile. Is my walk around zoom. Has never let me down.
Very well built. Reliable, fast and silent AF. Good image quality since f/4, although not at prime level (of course!). You may notice visible vignetting and distortion @24mm at max aperture but that is very easily corrected in post production.
It is a bit bulky and somewhat heavy lens but that is the price you pay for such a versatile lens. But it balances very well on my 6D.
For the price, it is a very good offer.

Pros:

Accurate, fast AF, with a very useful range of focal lengths for my needs, including a very useful short MFD, and weather-sealing. A very good value pre-owned, in early September 2014, with a successor rumored to be announced soon.
|
Cons:
|
Distortion at the 24mm end, but I knew that before buying, as indicated below, so not a con for me.
|
|
I needed a high-quality, weather-sealed zoom primarily for the 28-80mm range, for crime scene/evidentiary/forensic shooting, using my 1D Mark II N and 7D cameras. I learned my Crime Scene Unit colleagues had recently been issued this lens, to use on their 7D and 50D cameras. Working patrol, if I want a DSLR, I have to provide my own, and it seemed reasonable* to use a lens equal to those used by the Crime Scene folks. A beautiful pre-owned specimen of this lens fortuitously appeared at a local camera store, with a low $775 US asking price, and after a short test session, it came home with me.
A test shoot at home, indoors and outdoors, as the sun went down, confirmed I made a good choice. AF is quite fast and accurate, at least on a 1D II N body. The quite short minimum focusing distance will be very useful. This lens plays well with a 600EX-RT Speedlite, in E-TTL, with the expected -1 Flash Exposure Compensation being needed at close range.
This lens had never been on my wish list, but I had not known, until shortly before the purchase, that it was weather-sealed and had such a short minimum focusing distance. I had previously noticed that plenty of professionals and serious outdoors enthusiasts used it, in spite of the pixel-peepers not necessarily being happy with this lens. (I am not bashing pixel-peepers; some of them are friends of mine!)
This lens will join my 100mm and 60mm macro lenses as daily (nightly) working companions. It may not have f/2.8, and may have some crazy, complex barrel distortion at the wide end, but it has what I need, and will also be a good choice for some of my personal shooting, especially travel and walking-about.
I intended this review to be practical, not technical.
*When selecting an item of police equipment, credibility in the courtroom can be an issue, especially when being cross-examined by the opposing attorney. A lens selected by a large agency for digital image evidence at homicide scenes is a good choice for a patrol officer working for the same agency, who will be testifying in the same courts.

It could be a good walk around lens, if you can get a good copy.
Me, I tried 2 copies with the same decentering problem. 20-25% of the frame showing very visible lower resolution than the rest, at different focals each.
Seems like this is a very common feature of the canon lenses, too bad.

Zoomrange, cheap, good flat studiolens at higher apertures (so you don't buy it for the bokeh).
|
Cons:
|
IQ : heavy vignetting on FF, not so sharp, no f2.8, not ideal for portraits
|
|
I know older photographers that use it in studio at higher apertures thanks to the nice zoomrange, but Sigma meanwhile made the newer better 24-105 f4 Art (check Tony Northrups video on youtube, the Sigma is way sharper!)
So I don't recommend this lens, it's outdated and given almost free in kits, you can consider it as a kitlens which will be sold in future if you get to know better optics.
Go for the Sigma Art if you really enjoy the 24-105 zoomrange.
I wish I could also enjoy it, but i'm too picky, I choose fast lenses for the bokeh and sharpness. Even the 24-70's f2.8 are too slow for me

A grey walk around lens at a very decent price. IS comes in very handy and the image quality is well above average at all focal lengths. Had the 24-70 2.8L (v1) and was happy, however too heavy. Well pleased for the change to this lens.

I'm new here so I'm not sure I'm in the right place.
I'm not professional, but a camera of some kind is with me most of the time, often in dusty, rough-and-tumble environments.
I currently only have the kit 18-55 that came with my Rebel T1i.
I want a replacement walkaround lens with more zoom, don't do much wide angle, but quite a bit of close-up. I don't want to be changing lenses alot.
I seem to get mixed messages about this lens for cropped cameras. I know this lens might be overkill for a Rebel, but I like my camera and this lens has the zoom range (38-168mm) I'd like.
Any advice?
Thank you!

not f/2.8, wide open slightly off

Very good (not great) affordable L series lens...really an entry level 'L' kit lens. I think Canon knew the marketing link to the 5DM3 had to have a reasonable quality red-stripped lens. Overall, I am very satisfied, great walk around, solid weight and feel, good IS. Not sharp on the wide end, but really close. I must have a good copy, as it is clean over most of the range, just tweak back a little bit at each end. I think this is great lens for a non full frame such as a 7D. Paid $700 separately for my 5DM3, lots of these lenses on the resell/ebid market place. Tormented on the decision 24-70 or 24-105....the f/2.8 vs f/4.0 and $$$ at issue. Better if it was f/2.8, but I guess it would erode the model position of 24-70L f/2.8 both G1 and G2. I will pick up the 24-70 at some point...as they say "why not".
