Very good value, lens barrel nice and wide for easy gripping, good stabilisation, although does jar in the viewfinder when it comes on, fairly sharp at 70-200mm. Good warranty

Average to poor sharpness between 200-300mm, turns the opposite way from Canon lenses. Makes an odd click/crunch on mounting. I wouldn't want to get it wet

I have three lenses in this range, the Canon 70-200 f4 IS, the Canon 70-300IS and this.
The Canon non-L lens and Tamron are more or less identical for sharpness with a tiny victory for the Canon, although it's more expensive. Both lose a lot of sharpness and contrast after 200mm, sadly.
The Tamron comes with a good big hood and I'd say the stabilisation on the Tamron is better than the 70-300IS but the L lens is much better than both and considerably sharper at every length.
I do think the Tamron represents very good value for money though, especially with the excellent Tamron warranty.
A good tele zoom, but a bit short of being a great one

This is a nice piece of glass to half the price of a Nikon. Furthermore the VC i brilliant and give up to 4 stops. It is sharp from 70-200 mm.
I also like that the focus ring can be operated in autofocus mode.

It's a very sturdy build slightly larger then I was expecting. The zoom ring is very tight and very smooth. The VC is incredible... i have a 55-255 Canon STM and I like this one much better in overall, and it was cheaper. Amazon currently has it brand new for $349 with a $100 mail in rebate from Tamron good til the end of April. UNBEATABLE PRICE...
I just like the way it takes pics, very good quality and fast focus in outdoor lighting. I have a 1.4 x extender and it works but the focus is a little touchy in auto. If you manual focus is close and then hit the camera button half way down it will tighten up focus. this takes it way out there.

Replaced a Nikon 80-200mm f2.8. Don't miss it like I thought I might. This lens is a joy. Great balance on a D7100; wonderful reach on APS-C body. No drawbacks to note at all.

I've owned two of these lenses in the last few years, both Canon mount, and I've shot it on full frame (5D), 1.3 (1D2N) and crop (7D, 40D, XTI). For the price (even new, but especially used), I think this is the best value out there for a 70-300 zoom. There is some very minor vignetting on full frame, but not enough to be an issue (and easily corrected in post). I had great image sharpness and colors from both of the lenses I've owned. It performs well as a stand in portrait lens too, the bokeh is quite good considering it's not a portrait lens.
The build quality is great, the image stabilization (VC) is really good, and the AF speed is fantastic for a lens in this price range. This lens is pretty big, but not that heavy. The lens extends quite a bit, but still feels balanced on both larger and smaller bodied cameras. I found the AF speed, VC and image quality to be great for starter wildlife and bird photography. Obviously when compared to L-glass, tele-primes and other $1000-$5000 lenses, this one looks terrible, but when compared to all the other sub-$600 stuff out there, this is the best thing going in my opinion.
I don't think there is a better tele out there for the price.

My copy seems to be sharp over the whole range, VC works excellent, AF hits well. 5 year warranty! Build quality feels excellent to me. The price is a joke. The lens is pure pleasure.

AF could be faster. But I guess it could always be faster. Zoom and focus rings exchanged. I prefere the focus ring at the lenses front end.

I needed a long zoom lense for a business shooting. I was thinking about Canons 70-300 again, but it still felt to bulky, to heavy and way to expensive (and white) to me. So I went to a german technics discounter and asked for the Tamron. They had two and after 3 dozend testshots with the first copy I purchased it. They all looked very sharp.
After earlier bad experiences with multiple 3rd party lenses including Tamron I never again wanted to get one. But this lens was already working good with my 5D II and in combination with 6D it convinced me immediately (I have to say that all my lenses work faster and more reliable then before with this body).
The build quality rating of "8" was given by me because a sealed lens "feels" better to me. Not that the missing one caused any problems the last 4 month.

I did use this lens with my D7000.
I was able to get great results on that body. I even tried 1.4x TC and it provided very fine results but the focus did not always work properly.
For the price, this is an extraordinary lens and its VC works miracles. The picture just freezes which is very well appreciated at 300 (450) mm.
I am thinking of purchasing it again...
