I splurged and went for the 1.4 instead of the 1.8, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. This lens is so sharp, and the bokeh is so creamy and beautiful. It has easily become my favorite portrait lens!

I had the 1.8G but after getting a 105mm F2 DC I wasn't using it. So I decided to upgrade to the 85mm 1.4G.
The main benefit has been shooting at 1.4 and 1.6 for family/candids which the 1.8 can't do. The 1.8G is sharp but it seemed clinically sharp instead of flatteringly sharp. I'd say the 1.4G is flatteringly sharp which is more inline for the portraits and things I shoot.

Now owning a 85 1.4G and prior owning the 1.8G & 1.4D I'm a covert. The 1.4G is a superior lens in all ways, it has skin tones the 1.8g will never have... Jay968 says it all very eloquently...Viewing at 100%, this lens is tack sharp by 2.2

I have found a new favorite lens. It is now my primary lens; when I need something else, then I replace it for a short time. It yields "dreamy" images. Sharp with a nice background. Compared to my 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 it is a notch above. Nicer size than my zooms.

Although the 1.8G lenses that have recently been introduced have gotten some pretty good reviews, the 85mm F1.4G is one example of why a lens costs over 4X more. I have done some comparison shots with both the 1.8G and 1.4G and just find no comparison between the two. Yes the 1.8 is nice and sharp, but there is more to a lens than just sharpness. The color, contrast, bokeh, overall rendering, and build quality of the 1.4G is just absolutely gorgeous. Not everyone is going to care about the difference, not everyone is really going to see it. But it's there, and to someone who has shot for many years with some of the finest lenses made, the difference is absolutely worth the extra cost.
The 85mm F1.4G has become one of my very favorite lenses.
