amazingly sharp, compact and light. I really enjoy shooting with this lens. I don't even always use it for macro, it's just a fun medium telephoto to use as a portrait lense.
|
Cons:
|
tripod collar not included, nor is it really needed - it' s a small lens.

Let's start with the bad news: for being an L lens its build quality feels a bit plastic. Having said that, the optics are great, sharp, IS works fine and price is not absurdly high compared with other L lenses.

Obtained the lens from Canon refurbished (and on sale! 10% off!). Have now taken 1000+ pictures with the lens using a 5DII and it has performed extremely well for flowers, butterflies and portraits. Image are as sharp as the TS-E 90 which is pretty high praise and sharper than the 70-200 f/4 IS. The IS on the lens has been quite useful for some indoor, low light museum use.

What can I say that hasn't been said already? This is a fantastic lens, perhaps one of Canon's very best. The IS is extremely effective at portrait distances, and while nowhere near 4 stops at macro distances, is still a real help (perhaps 2 stops?).
I use this for portrait, landscape, event and macro photography and it excels in each of those roles. While "only" f/2.8, it will throw most backgrounds delightfully out-of-focus and the bokeh is extremely smooth and appealing. It has a very flat field and is incredibly sharp at all apertures and distances, from corner to corner. If anything for portraits it might be too sharp, but I often solve that with either a filter or in post.
If you like the 100mm focal length and want to get really close on a Canon DSLR, just buy this lens. There is nothing better in this range.

Sharp, great contrast, color rendition, lightweight, minimum focus distance and accessories.

Cons:

The body finish is not quite as nice as the 50L and 85L/IS lenses.
|

I owned the non L version many years ago and was happy with the images it produced. A friend owns the original 100L macro and I barrowed it for a shoot and it was impressive. I found a great deal on a used 100L IS and am sure that I'll be using it along with my 50L and 85L/IS for food and product shoots.

Amazing lens! I use this as a macro, close up and portrait lens!
Just figure out which of the three macro stands you have to use and it's almost fast enough for everything. Even sport. Only the closest focus range is slow. All macro pictures on http://facebook.com/totaalfotografie are made with this amazing lens.

Super Sharp, Fast USM Autofocus with range selection optimized for macro, Hybrid IS, creamy Bokeh, includes hood
|
Cons:
|
needs Macrolite adapter for ring/twin flash, cost, no tripod mount
|

Bought this lens to replace the 100 2.8 USM macro, that I've had for many years. It is very similar in terms of optical characteristics (i.e. fantastic), but the Hybrid IS and USM AF optimized for macro work blew me away when I finally decided to upgrade to the 100L. IMHO essential for anyone who does hand held macro work. I give this lens top marks.

Best macro I have used in 25 years botanical exploration. Goes on every expedition. Color rendition and overall sharpness are excellent. Plastic construction makes it pretty light, but lens is still incredibly tough. Fast af makes it useful for non-macro work.

Nice thing about this lens is that the front element does not rotate or extend, all focusing happens internally. The manual focus ring also is big enough and smooth.

I've had, all versions, including non-USM, no doubt, this is the best, for while the former does not exceed in sharpness, the IS, is the best that Canon has IS.
With the Canon 1DX behaves very well and is able to do things how are you:
