I purchased my first camera thirty years ago and had a very frustrating couple of years. OM1, the camera was fine the guy behind it was useless.
Got truly hooked on photography ten years later when I saw my first wet print appear. I found the printing process more enjoyable than taking the shot, test strips burning and dodging (sigh) nostalgia.
I still prefer black and white to colour.
I've got my new toy Canon 20D I'm in heaven
