Run the files through Denoise then get back to me. Cropping with the R5 is not any better than the bare 7DII IMO.. Only advantage is if you are filling the frame with full frame. I tried the R5 several times. I passed.. I am curious about the new R5II, to see if they have improved the sensor tech.
I have run them thru DXO, and that's why I got back to you. Not sure why I would crop the R5 images, though - I have lenses covering 10 to 800mm and bought a full frame 45MP camera for a reason, and not an R7.
Pixel level noise aside, the R5 is better than the 7D2 in many other areas than "just the AF," but you probably knew that already and just use it as hyperbole. Again, I'm genuinely happy that you like your camera. I like mine, too.
If you don't have to crop you are good to go. But, the 7DII is not much worse than the R5 as far as noise goes . Agree the AF is a huge reason to go with the R5.
My thoughts only, if cropping the R5 to 7DII . Noise is a little better with the R5, the image quality is also better. And the AF is way better of course. I am always having to sharpen the 7DII to try to get a better image.
With LR that has gone away. I can Denise , sharpen in one fell swoop. With no work what so ever.
Cropping for me is a must shooting birds. Even at 800-1200 equilivent I am often cropping 50% or even more. So, for me I find no advantage other than better AF between the R5 and 7D II at this point. And the R7 IMO is a not worth the price of popcorn. I would not own that camera if given to me after trying it out.
