That is an important factor for me, which may not be relatable for other folks. I had an exchange with another member recently discussing a technology hobby alongside a photography hobby.
If I want to try out a piece of gear, say a Sony A7R V, I want to try it with a few pieces of glass and for several weeks or months.
I can purchase those items used here on FM, and resell for a small loss, and often for the same price I purchased.
If I were to rent the A7R + the f/2.8 zoom trinity from lensrentals.com, it would be over $1900 for 1 month.
To me, it's a relatively cheap rental to try out a cool system that I don't actually want to own long term. I also respect folks who buy new and hold on to their equipment until it dies of old age.
