Re: Global Shutter discussion

I think we should keep this video in perspective.

I think what Mark Galler is showing is what a good sports and other such events camera the GS A9III camera is. He shot peak moment kinds of shots, and shots that could have been made with just about any current mirrorless camera. He shot some with flash, and some without. All the images, including the sequences that looked like video but were actually RAW stills have IQ suitable for just about any imaginable use for this kind of photography. This was not a pixel peeping kind of test. Rather it was a demonstration of this camera's intended use case.

What this camera provides is a higher time resolution photographic option. This absolutely increases the number of peak emotion images that will be produced. Yes, it is possible that any one of these images could have been captured by slower cameras even a 3 fps DSLR and yes even old single shot film cameras, and even a 20fps Z9. These objections and nit picking is BS I see being made are identical in tone and perspective to the ones I used to read here in the Nikon forums about the advantages of mirrorless and stacked sensors prior to the release of the Z9. Often by even those same people. They mostly stopped being made by these same people when they purchased their Z9/Z8 when they were finally released. I expect that sme thing to happen until Nikon is able to get a GS camera in a few years time.

As for IQ, DR, and noise. I have seen tests where the A9III results in these areas are better than the best APS-C sensors, and worse than the current generation FF sensors, stacked or rolling shutter versions. I will wait for more testing in this regard before making any judgements. But just because it is all we have at this point I will link this Z9 to D500 comparison chart for a reference point. If you were happy with the IQ of your D500 which many here in this forum claimed to be at the time, then you should be very pleased with the IQ of the A9III and thrilled with the added capabilities. Except of course the inmutable feature of the wrong logo on the front.

From the Base ISO of 200 on I expect that the A9III will slot right between the D500 and Z9 on the chart. Probably by a similar amount that the A9II stacks above the Z9.

I have no interest in acquiring an A9III. I just don't do that kind of photography. If I never shot, nor even saw another image of a bird I wouldn't miss it. The only sports I am interested in photographing is those that my Grandchildren are actually playing in. However, I am sure for its intended market the A9III will be very well accepted and appreciated for enhancing the genre.
