High performance lenses? Do we really need such top notch quality everyday? It's like driving a Ferrari every time you need to take the kids to school. Or Ford is enough and much convenient?
I feel this argument is getting a it old. It is not about needs. It is is about options. It is about Nikon’s identity as a top optical company. It is about future preparedness for higher MP cameras. It is about brand reputation. It is about Nikon’s overall approach and strategy to survive and succeed in the competition in shrinking market. I understand people’s personal preferences, nostalgia, affection for older design lenses, and there are ton of options Nikon and third party manufacturers are providin for those. On the other hand, until towards the end of DSLR era, one can argue F lenses were not doing as good optically in comparison to the competitors such as Otus or Sigma Art lenses. With Z mount, Nikon can explore full potential of what the mount can give with the aid of ever advancing technology. Why on earth should they hold back and be satisfied with mediocre lenses spending limited R&D resources? I personally am not at all seeing the criticism of ‘clinical’ , ‘lifeless’ lens rendering that many who prefers the old lenses describe modern lenses to a degree that it is certainly taken for granted, and we are supposed to agree? At the same time, ,while there seem to be little attempt to prove the negatives of modern imaging design in general. . Like I said, I just don’t see it. I also don’t see that much of the criticism to be directed towards Otus, Milvus, or Sigma Art. It is just Nikon that screwed up lens design. It just doesn’t seem fair argument. Like I said, there are many options to shoot older lenses with Z systems. I am much happier that Nikon to keep pushing their ides of great lenses with Z mount. If I like them, I will buy, if not, I will pass, but for Nikon to hold back is a bad idea. I do also hope the next rounds when updates to the current Z lenses are due, Nikon to try reducing the sizes of some of the behemoth. Time will tell. Lastly, I also do own and enjoy some of the great F lenses, but I don’t particularly wish Nikon to retrofit them to Z mounts. That is a bit of a waste of their resources in my perspective.
