Why are you turning VR off? I leave mine in sport mode 100%.

current Nikon trade in program is awesome. I'd love a Z9, but doesn't fit my hands very well.
You mean it's too large? Coming from using Canon bodies for 20 years, the Z9 is taking some getting used to. On any Canon my hands feel right in place. On the Z9 they feel out of place, but that will change in time as I adapt to it. The R3 feels the best in my hands, most likely due to familiarity, but the Z9 is the camera I want and got. I think one can adapt to any body, even a Sony , but it takes a bit of time with the ergonomics and button layouts.
What's throwing me off a bit is the lack of VR buttons on the 70-200. It's strange to have to do that in menus - VR ON/OFF and modes. Buttons are simpler and you have the visual feedback without pressing a menu button.
I use to keep my kit always in sport mode as a default but as TooManyShots mentioned VR can interfere with AF performance and framing consistency. I only use sports mode when I am shooting subjects (wildlife not sports) with rapid movement/panning involved. Since I am handholding the majority of time, I've defaulted to the standard VR mode and in some cases I turn it off when shooting at really high shutter speeds. For me, I've notice a pretty significant increase in overall sharpness with my photos without doing any post work to the image(s).
