Re: Global Shutter discussion

The operational word with global shutter is "latency". From the very beginning of visual content creation improvements in latency ahs been at the center of advancement. Film ASA was about how quickly the film could get enough light for the exposure. Digital ISO is about how quickly the sensor can get enough light for exposure. Sensor scan speed, and stacked sensors are about how quickly the sensor can get enough light for proper exposure.

A great part of increasing processor power, expanding buffer, and even such things as pre-capture (makes up for human latency) are about reducing latency. You can cut in half, or increase those things by 2X every year for ever. But when doing that they will never achieve zero latency. Simple math. But now, for the first time in a FF ICL camera we have a zero across the frame latency when it comes to sensor light gathering. That is now done. It mathematically can never be less than zero, although it can be improved to do it for higher resolution, DR, lower noise, and other things. . That is a very big deal, and it does change everything.

Since the issue of time is now solved at that level, the rest of the systems must be improved to keep up. Bigger buffers, faster processors, faster storage, faster transfer, longer pre-capture, lower power (equals lower noise), supporting equipments such as strobes, higher DR, the needs of systems needing development to support this achievement is huge. But solving for zero latency at the sensor scan level of opens up huge possibilities for visual content creation.

Yes, going forward this is a big deal and a game changer. Every camera out there by all manufacturers that are not global shutter based are now a previous generation platform. That doesn't mean that they aren't the best choice for today. In fact, I don't believe the A9III is the right camera for me either, so I won't be buying one. But we must recognize the first next generation camera is now available for pre-order, and will ship shortly. Saying otherwise will one day be viewed as saying film, DSLRs, were "good enough" to get the job done. Such views then were very short sighted, those failing to see the importance of what just happened will be viewed much the same in a few years.
