Just re-read Alex Kunz article just to refresh the old coconut. He says yes you can't recover highlights which is true. He is not big on Auto but Tony Kuyper. I know it's kinda lazy edit but it's just my staring point. What I did notice using Linear and then Adobe Neutral was it did not blow out highlights that weren't in the blown in the first place. Shadows and blacks jut looked better to me.

I also agree with Alex and have thought for a long time that Auto plays better with Adobe profiles. Anything that gets off to a good start quicker works for me. Then I fine tune. Just a few examples. 3 different profiles and then I pressed Auto.

1st is Adobe Color

2nd is Canon Neutral

3rd is Adobe Neutral. The chest just looks so nice and even. Backs and shadows are the same. Adobe Neutral lacks a little push so I add blacks and contrast. Something I don't have to do for the others. This works for my needs.
