I have the Sigma 35 F2 and while I don't have the 40G, vs, my S/Zeiss 35mm f2.8 ZA with regards to rendering and sharpness it is an improvement. And I am a big fan of the Sigma 65 f2 as well. The 2 Sigs have replaced my 35 and 55 ZA for general use and travel.
