Ohio rare bird sighting Limpkin on 'Ice'

Decided to make a run out to scout an area that most certainly sees a diverse 'in and out' flow of migratory birds. Upon arriving and with a loud background soundstage of Tundra Swans I was greeted by a gentleman by the name of Steve that asked me if I were here to see the Limpkin? I was a bit taken off guard because I had for one not heard about it being here and my mind wasn't processing that it would even be in Ohio in the Winter!

A short walk around where it had been seen produced nothing so I went about my 2-3hr hike exploring the dikes and enjoying the passing Tundra Swans and geese, ducks and gulls, it was a beautiful sunny approaching 45 degree day with no wind for a change I returned to where I started off to find Steve with a big smile pointing at the feeding Limpkin on the ice! It was fun to watch it poke the thawed water near submerged logs and tree bases and pull up a snail to then hammer it on the the ice to crack it open and feed. Lucky me

Here are a few to share of my first ever Limpkin way out of town from where it should be, I understand it has been in this area since September, not sure how long it can hold up to the hard freeze we have coming, might have to go to the pet supply aquarium store to see how many snails I can buy We have had a mild Fall, just recently did we get a good freeze and snow so maybe this Limpkin got caught off guard and maybe it will attempt to Winter over??
