And what does "automatic" mean? I hope it means closest eye to the camera. Except in rare circumstances, who would always want the left eye, or always the right?
Looks like Auto might mean Eye AF switches dynamically to the left or right eye. Maybe as you wrote based upon which eye is closest or perhaps most visible. See example footage here: https://youtu.be/QCXJPEXISHE @ 23:12
"Auto" will use the eye closest to the camera per Patrick Murphy in the video you posted previously.
