Sugar and Lollipops | |
Last summer I read that White Sands National Monument has a balloon invitational every September. I started thinking about that event and could visualize a colorful balloon rising up from behind a white sand dune. By my way of thinking, that image would be Sugar and Lollipops. And if I could get some cooperation from the clouds it would be Sugar, Lollipops and Cotton Candy. Having that image in my mind proved to be too much. I took a Friday off from work and flew to El Paso, Texas, then drove to Alamogordo, New Mexico and checked into the vintage White Sands Motel. I spent Friday sunset checking out the Monument since I had never been there before. Saturday and Sunday the balloons launch, but be advised they only launch from the White Sands National Monument on one morning. They other day they launch from a balloon park closer to Alamogordo.
I made this trip alone since I could not find anyone to go with me. The entire three days was a lot of fun and I would recommend it. Be advised that there are many people at White Sands and they are sitting at the top of the dunes watching this whole process. There are children running all over the place, just being kids. That means that foot prints are every where and getting a shot of just balloons and white sand is challenging, but can be done.
This year the balloon invitational is September 21st and 22nd. Plenty of information is on the internet.
For those that like the workshop type of format, Derek von Briesen leads a workshop for Arizona Highways, just so you know.
