My primary portrait lens is the 85 L II on full frame, but I like the 40 pancake as a lightweight travel option and a backup as a normal range lens.
The 40 should be fine on crop, especially as a backup for portraits. Have you considered the 60 macro? I really liked that lens my I shot a 40D.
