Is there a home remedy for this or does it require a trip to Canon? It's stuck in the depressed position, so the lens rotates freely, doesn't lock on.

I've had that happen before in the field.

With the lens off, try depressing the lens release button and while depressed, let your finger slide off the button so it "pings" out. Try it several times and if that doesn't get it try "gently" rapping on the lens mount with a penny, right next to the pin.

If the pin pops out, clean it and add a fraction of a drop of lubricant, like barely touching the side of the pin with a cotton swab. Also, inspect the end of the pin for any burrs as sometimes the rotational force of the bigger lenses when mounted can cause an almost invisible burr that causes the pin to stick.

If none of the above works, off to Canon I guess.

Good luck Nill

Thanks. The "ping" gambit was working earlier tonight, but now it seems well and truly stuck.

Well, I pinged it a few more times and it popped out again. Lube, huh? What kind?

I'd think Sewing Machine oil would be the best option. It won't get gummy over time like WD-40 (don't ever let WD-40 near a camera) or 3n1. Put just a small amount on the tip of a toothpick and put it on the place where the pin moves. If there is something like a grain of sand in the pin, it could stick again though, and you don't really have any way of know whether it was a fluke or will happen again.

Sometimes the latch will not retract because the C-clip that locks into the slotted shaft has broken. I replaced the C-clip on mine and it's no big deal to do. The hardware store has them.

Nill,

This has happened to both my 1D3's. I got by for a while with a little ping and a little lube, but the bottom line is you're on borrowed time and it's time to send it in. It was a much cheaper fix at Canon than the local shop (especially w/ CPS).

For what it's worth,

Ralph

OK thanks all. Wish I could make it through the playoffs, but it's been getting progressively worse. :-(

Hmmm... maybe I should just stick the 400 on there and leave it till the season's over.

Don't wait. Send it in. Or it can get stuck with your least desirable lens and at the worst time according to laws of Murphy. Trust me on this one.

But it's getting stuck in the in (unlocked) position, not out/locked...

Yes, mine started that way. I would have to physically push the little switch on the lens to make it engage. It was like the spring loaded thing did not work. And then eventually, it got stuck in the locked position. I was lucky that it eventually was freed with a bit of brute force -and I was sweating bullets while trying to remove it fearing that I might damage the lens or body doing so. After that, the lens went to Canon.

Sorry Nill, I replied thinking you were talking about the lens hood latch - disregard.

Thanks Mark. I did spend a few minutes puzzling (mentally only) over where replacement of a C-clip might come into play here, and I was buffaloed. ;-)

The pin is slightly bent. Lightly sanding the sides of the pin with 400 grit paper or finer will smooth the high spot.
