Differences are small or nonexistent, and I have never seen solid evidence of changes to the optical formula. Over time, the progression of changes include AE becoming MM, German production moving to Japan, iris shape changing away from "ninja star", and minor cost reductions. Note that many exceptions exist. In particular, the Sonnar 85 started as AEG with engraved metal aperture ring, then moved to Japan and got a cheapo plastic aperture ring with silkscreened lettering and MM capability, then moved back to Germany (metal aperture ring was not restored ). The S85 is a wonderful lens, although overpriced compared to the even better S100/3.5.
