p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 60D Video Question

I'm getting back into the DSLR Mode. I've been with Canon forever.

My question is. Is the video mode any good? The only use I would need it for is when I do swimming next fall. Will I be able to get the swimmers in focus on the move? Or am I better off getting a 40D for the pictures and a camcorder to go with it?

Just wondering. I'm starting from scratch so I could also go for the Nikon D7000 which has AF in Video mode.

Either one i'll be getting the 70-200mm IS or VR for Nikon.

If you're relying on auto focus, you should probably get a camcorder for fast moving subjects. If you're willing to manual focus, or you're using a wider lens and/or a narrow aperture, you can probably use a DSLR.

You don't mention which camcorder you're considering, but shooting video with a DSLR v. a typical consumer camcorder is really two different things. Indeed, if AF while recording is your concern I don't think even the D7000 can compare to most camcorders. But I also don't think the aesthetic/look from the typical camcorder compares to what you can get from a DSLR (overall IQ is probably pretty close these days between an HD camcorder and a 60D or D7000, but the "look" is different IMO. I much prefer the DSLR.)

I have to say I love shooting with my 70-200 F4 L IS (sometimes with a 1.4xTC) on my 60D. It has a very filmic look. But I will say I haven't tried to shoot sports with that combo. Manually focusing is a bit of a challenge, esp. with a long lens, wide aperture and small LCD screen (the swivel screen on the 60D is a big step up for video though.) But that kinda makes it fun IMO.

I haven't shot with a D7000 so don't really know what it's capable of video AF-wise. I think the new Sony's are better than either Canon or Nikon in that regard. But I'm heavily invested in (and pretty satisfied with) my Canon gear so not interested in switching any time soon.

Thanks, I had the Sony A33 and the AF for video was awsome. The battery life sucked on the Sony. It would be ok if I had an extra battery.

interesting I was going to suggest a sony A33 or A55 (or maybe the new A77?) . the Peli mirror is what helps that in video mode (but probably takes a bit away from stills)
As for the D7k . I know they bill it as haveing Video AF from what I've read and the few videos I've seen online it does not look THAT much better than the rest of the bunch.
