For example I will. For $1200 I think it's a steal compared to X1. I need something I can have with me on a daily bases. With my Canon setup it's simply impossible.

For some reason I don't see Leica as a direct competitor with anyone, so I don't think the X100 will take away from the sales of the x1. People who can afford it will buy the Leica for its characteristics and the cachet of the brand. To echo what someone over on the Nikon forum said, I have a feeling Fuji will have more pre-orders for the X100 than orders for the x1 that Leica will have for the life of the product.

I disagree.

I could afford the x1, but I won't throw away my money on one just because its a Leica. The X100 looks to be a much better camera and that's where my money would go.

Why not? Plenty of people spend more than that for a 35L.

+1, the x100 his has an innovative OVF with EVF informations overlay, f/2 fixed 35mm-equivalent lens. For me just the perfect camera to carry everyday.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I didn't mean everyone who can afford to buy the Leica buys one, only that if you can afford it and you like the look of its files (perceived or otherwise) and/or the feeling of owning a Leica, you'll buy one regardless of the number of technological advances it might have (or, in the case of the x1, not have). They price their stuff, like the x1, in a manner similar to, say, Porsche. You can find other cars that objectively outperform them at a fraction of the cost, but there is a certain segment of society that will say there is no substitute and think that the high price they paid makes them feel special for owning one. Fuji, Canon, Nikon, etc. cameras have become commodities where they try to pack as much gewgaws into their stuff as possible to compete with each other, while brands like Leica rely more upon their uniqueness and brand loyalty and cachet.

You know, just to point out a couple of things while the leica bashing is in full force.

a) The x1 has been out for over a year. Compared to the sigma offerings at the time, it was miles ahead

b) It actually fits in a pocket

c) it has had, and continues to have, the analog controls so many are now clamoring for and enthusiastic about.

I think to dismiss the x1 as a nothing camera is a bit ridiculous. The x100 wasn't out a year ago.. the sigma had effectively a 4mp sensor and was slow / horrible high iso. The fact that the million dollar question is 'will the x100 files look as good as the x1 files' speaks volumes when you are comparing an idea and technology that has been available for over a year to something that is still coming.

Obviously (witnessed by my previous posts as well as the hatemail I get on Lcam) I don't think the x1 is perfect.. but I think some of the comments are ridiculously dismissive.

As for the price on either.. if you want it and will enjoy it, why not? I guess I paid the leica tax on the x1.. but there wasn't anything else like it back when I bought it... that said, it may be sold for the fuji - we will see how the fuji actually is.. beyond prerelease conjecture.

Not me, but not due to the price. The fixed FL, non-interchangeble lens is too limiting.

is the aperture control manual on this camera?

Manual or automatic; your choice. There's an aperture control ring on the lens, and if you turn it to the red "A" you get automatic aperture.

It reminds me of the controls on my Canon AE-1 Program. (I had to say that; this is the Canon forum.)

I CANT WAIT for this! Small, light, fast, fashionable, I want. This will be my ultimate walkaround rig.

I'm puting this on my wish list. Key benefits for me are the compact size, relatively fast lens, nearly silent operation (important for shots during a wedding ceremony, theatrical performance, etc.), and high sync speed with any flash/strobe without loss of output level.

+1

I really like its looks and I really like primes but a non-interchangeable prime seems like a silly idea to me, at least at this price.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

"...important for shots during a wedding ceremony, theatrical performance..."

that brings up a question: in both situations, given the FOV of the fixed lens, you'd ~need be standing pretty close to your subject - where generally only commissioned photographers would be allowed. are you suggesting that you'd use this camera for professional applications?

cheers

Agreed, but there have been many famous photographs made from simple 35mm cameras with a fixed FL lens. Can you imaging walking around with a Leica and 50mm lens stuck on the end? I can.

How about buying 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2, putting it on your 5DII and using this setup as a walk-around rig? I don't think it would sound strange to you. Yet having a small walk-around camera with a fixed lens does sound strange to some. And X100 will not replace my Canon equipment. I just like its looks, controls, fact that it has a viewfinder and most of all its size. Maybe you can point me in a right direction to where I can get similar camera? Besides X1.

Sure, but a lot of people missed a lot of shots. Besides, the M Leicas had interchangeable lenses and there was the latter day 28-35-50. I might pay $1500 for something like that with the x100 body, though I'd prefer a 70mm on the long end.

Absolutely. Not as my only camera, or even my main camera, but for certain specialized uses at certain times, yes.

For example; during weddings I used to use a 6 x 6 camera with a semi-wide lens from the choir loft (or on a stand in the back of the church if there was no loft) to get an overall image of the church. I'd use the 6 x 6 (a TLR) rather than my 35mm because of the silent leaf-shutter design. With the X100 I'd have the equivalent of a 35mm camera with a 35mm f/2 leaf-shutter lens to serve the same purpose.

but i believe that's somewhat their point - with an interchangeable lens mount, you can decide to go out with just one of them on one day, and different one on the next. and when the body/sensor becomes obsolete, the lens you paid for doesn't become obsolete-by-association.

edit: thx for the explanation, brian =)

Speaking of my TLR (A Yashica Mat 125G); it had fixed lenses, and I had two accessory lenses that could screw onto the built-ins, one for the viewing lens and one for the taking lens. They would convert the semi-wide framing to short telephoto.

I bet it won't be long before there's a similar offering for the X100; if not by Fuji, then by a 3rd party. (If so, hopefully they'll work better than the ones for the Yashica.)
